Default Sony cuts price of PS3 development kit

"With more and more new and exciting PS3 titles scheduled for release this year from third-party developers and publishers as well as from SCE Worldwide Studios," the company added, "SCEI will deploy various measures to further reinforce game development for PS3 and will continue to expand the platform to offer attractive interactive entertainment experiences only available on PS3."

Initially, the development kit cost $20,000 USD but the price was halved in late 2007.

While this move wont make a difference to large publishers, small independent developers should be very excited for the price drop which will allow them to finally see the PS3 as a viable alternative.
Seeing how Sony cut the dev kit from $10K to $2K, we could see alot more games made by small developers hitting PSN!

^^no it means that we'll have more people working on games which is a good thing for everyone, because i'm sure that there are some very talented devs who can't afford to pay for a dev kit

Not to mention that larger devs can buy more dev kits, and publishers can also buy more dev kits to send out to their dev partners.

There's nothing but good news in all this.

The hardware isn't that much different from a PS3 really. $2000 still seems overpriced to me. Still this is good news.

This is good news. It gives more developers the chance to make games for PS3. Good move Sony. Now all you need to do is give a price cut on the PS3 itself to get more people to buy the system.

Well, if I quoted him and replied the same way, I'd appear confrontational, so I quoted you instead to seem didactic.

The people against Sixaxis usage seem to be a LOT louder than those that like it. I'm one of those people that likes it.

Kinda off topic, but I agree. SIXAXIS in Warhawk was awesome! It really added to the game for me.

On topic, I agree with most here, this will help the "little guy" get in the game easier. Didn't think there'd be a drop that big though, that's a huge difference.

I would say to give the SIXAXIS™ some time, and we will see innovative and fun implementations of it in the future, where the onus of having to include it will be gone already (it's already starting to fade away).

I think the best parallel to SIXAXIS™ is the DS. If you look at first generation DS titles, they pretty much all implement Touch, regardless of how absurd or asinine its utilization. Basically, when the DS first came out, the paradigm was, "TOUCH THIS SHIT ALL THE TIME AND TRY TO LOOK AT BOTH SCREENS ALWAYS!" It wasn't until a few years later that we started to see more traditional games, where Touch and dual screens complemented and improved old design.

I expect the same for SIXAXIS™.

Lol, I wouldn't count on it. I own a small software company and went through the entire application process with Sony last year only to be denied. We've been in busy 15 years, never lost money, and had a game 80% complete. You can still see the videos I posted here as part of the application process (really old builds).

http://iainc.net

Fortunately for me, MS released their CG service for independents and you only need an Xbox and a $50.00 subscription to release games on the Xbox. Our game will be hitting sometime in the next month. I was really disappointed in Sony and did something I never thought I would do, bought an Xbox

Sony really needs to something similar as MS now has over 200 games from independents and a lot of them are really good. I had hoped that releasing on the Xbox would give me the ability to re-apply with Sony but at this point, I've invested so much time in their architecture that I just don't see it being viable.

Just my 2 cents from someone who's been down that road.
