There's a ton of threads on this. Bottom line is that they are for convenience and don't really improve the sound at all. You'd "need" two pairs for each speaker wire to terminate at the receiver end and speaker end.

convenience and improved aesthetics. it looks cleaner when speaker wire is connected with banana plugs, also if you move your equipment around a bit it is much easier to hook your system back up with banana plugs

Agree 100%! They make it easy to clean around my set up so they are worth every penny to me. Very simple to use and when it is hooked up you KNOW it is hooked up properly which equals peace of mind.

Again, you'd need two pairs for each speaker wire. For a 7.1 setup, that's 14 pairs as you'd not use it for your sub. If you bi-wire or bi-amp, it'd be more.

That'd be 28 banana plugs...... (I see the question coming.....)

You'll want a sub-cable if you're not using one already.

Nope, they won't diminish. That's the short answer of it.

are you referring to the idea that unless you have a VERY high end setup you cant detect a difference?

I have read Intamin's post like 3x and have not gotten even a hint of bashing anybody with less than steller equipment. IMHO, banana plugs make things more convenient than say spades or bare wires,

I agree, except I had my cables terminated with bananas on both ends and then when my amp arrived I realized the binding posts would only accept spades. That wasn't convenient.
