Arrow Why do people like upconversion?

You ask me, it creates MORE grain, blurring and overfills the colors. Someone explain to me why some people think this crap is better than blu-ray?

I don't think it's anywhere near Blu-ray quality, but I think it looks better than an un-upconverted DVD. There are still a lot of movies and TV shows that are only available on DVD and if I decide to watch them it's definitely going to be on an upconverting player.

I've never heard it's better. But as a good way to save hundreds of bucks - sure.

I just use it for movies like LOTR, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. where I have no choice since they aren't released yet on BD. Believe me, the day LOTR or Star Wars Eps 4-6 come out on Blu, the SD versions will never see the light of day again Actually, my upconverted DVDs don't look that bad at all...entertainment value is worth it for me in the end

If they say they like it better than Blu-ray, which a few on other forums have stated, then odds are it's:

Sour Grapes.jpg

Other than that, it's a good way to add value to a DVD collection.

A lot of movies are yet to be released on Blu-ray. So, for those DVDs that have not been released in Blu-ray form I watch up-converted.

Sour grapes... Good one!

Anyone who thinks an upconverted DVD looks as good as a Blu-ray has eyesight issues.

That being said, and as others have stated, many titles are only available on DVD at this point, and as such an upconverting Blu-ray player is the best option for those movies.

What I am having trouble understanding at this point in home theater sales is companies and salesmen pushing upconverting DVD standalones -- as if they're some sort of alternative to Blu-ray players. That's hogwash. They need to get the f--- over that mindset and start selling Blu-ray players.

Either A} they're HD-DVD holdouts. B} they have serious eye problems and need to see a doctor as soon as possible C} they have some sort of brain problems, or D} all of the above.

not as sharp or clear or vibrant as blu-ray but perhaps on a smaller size TV people can't tell the difference.

I was in Target the other day gettinga blu-ray. Had 1 guy talking to his friend comparing the features on the back fo a blu-ray and the DVD version. His end comment was they have the same extra features so you should jsut get the DVD and upconvert it. no point getting the blu-ray since it cost more and didn't have anything extra on it compared to the DVD.

I feel sorry for his poor friend for getting this kind of advice.

Dvds can look RIDICULOUSLY good upconverted. One time I put in a rental and couldn't remember if it was Blu or dvd but the image and colors were so strong I thought it had to be.

Obviously these movies would look even better on Blu but I wouldn't hate on upconversion.

More hating for me, then! jk. A good upconversion has its place, make no mistake about it. I would simply never accept an upconverted DVD's image as a replacement to Blu-ray's. They just can't really compare.

I wouldn't say an upconverted DVD is as good as a Blu-ray but wouldn't the quality depend a lot on the chipset doing the upconversion? Another factor that I have never seen mentioned is if you only have a 720 TV and the Blu-ray is coded at 1080 you are downconverting. That down convert would seem trickier than the upconvert, which pixels do you throw away or do you take three pixels and average it over a two pixel display, etc.? There is some heavy processing needed to toss out the pixels I would think.

better then blu NEVER, but with a good upconvert player it makes me able to enjoy my DVDs on my big screen instead of shuddering at the thought of putting them in, and frankly i have many tv shows and comedies i will never get on blu, and i would like them to look as crispy as possable

That is the final answer. They are cheaper then blu-ray players. They are not and can not be as good as a blu ray movie.

It puts enough polish on most DVD for me to ignore the quality and enjoy the movie. Otherwise I am sometimes constantly thinking about how poor it looks.

What most people fail to realize is if you have a fixed pixel TV your TV is already up scaling everything to it's native resolution. You don't need an up converting DVD player. Some players will do a better job scaling the image then your TV and some do a worse job then the display but the picture looks different so the customer thinks it looks better.
