Default 6.1 on a 7.1 setup

I was wondering, if you have a 7.1 surround setup and you´re watching a 6.1 movie (ie. american psycho, terminator 2: skynet edition) do the surround back speakers sound the same as if they were one? or only one works? or they don´t work at all?

From what I understand, the receiver with matrix the 6th channel into both surround rears.

With older Dolby EX and DTS ES (both 6.1) systems, a "7.1" system simply sent the same signal to both back surrounds. I assume the same would apply to newer systems, but I'm not certain. I know that receivers can apply PLIIx processing to signals less than 7.1 to expand them to all of the channels.

I would think, as others have said, it would send the signal to both surround back channels. It would sound screwy and offset if only one of them worked. Put in a 6.1 movie and listen closely to some scenes to see which speakers the sound is coming out of when there are surround back effects. I'm curious to know for sure.

I recall that on the Digital Video Essentials disc they say that 7.1 is nothing more than splitting the single rear into two identical signals, meaning 7.1 is essentially the same thing as 6.1. Having only 5.1 and no access to a 6.1/7.1 setup I can't verifiy this statement.
