France Coco avant Chanel

Warner-France are set to release Anne Fontaine's Coco avant Chanel (2009) in Gallic territories on October 22.

Ioncinema:
Quote:
Freely adapted from the Chanel biography "L'Irreguliere" by Edmonde Charles-Roux, this is scripted by Fontaine and Christopher Hampton, Tautou will star as Coco Chanel in a biopic about the legendary French fashion designer. The film, which will focus on Chanel's childhood and early womanhood. The woman who invented French chic was born into poverty as Gabrielle Chanel, the illegitimate daughter of a traveling salesman, in 1883. After the death of her mother and abandonment by her father she spent seven years in a Catholic orphanage, where she learned to sew. But fashion wasn't her first career choice. As a young woman, Chanel had ambitions to be a singer and it was while warbling "Who's Seen Coco in the Trocadero" in a cabaret that she acquired the nickname Coco. While working as a cabaret singer, she also took to sewing the stage clothes for the likes of French cabaret star Mistinguette before being taken under the wing wealthy Balsan. His chateau became Chanel's home and her gateway to a new life. Balsan introduced her to Capel, who played a crucial role in Chanel's rise to fashion fame and fortune

This is a project I have been keeping my eye on for awhile now. I really hope the film ends up being as good as it appears to be, and it is worthy of adding to my Blu-ray library. What are the chances that this one will be region free?

It is Warner, so there is a chance that it will be Region-Free. Regardless of its coding, we will cover it.

This has come in for some very heavy criticism in the U.K. and U.S., most of which seems to be centred on Tautou's performance. How can she have rubbed up the wrong way so many Anglophone critics? I'm still happy to watch her in films.

Is that for BD only or for DVD as well?
Because "Un Longe Dimanche des fiancelles" was released with english subs on DVD from Warner France

I'm only talking about Blu-Ray and I'm also only talking about French movies, so Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and the others you mentioned are irrelevant.

Oh really? Please do enlighten me because from where I stand, all of Warner France's French BD releases don't have English subtitles: De l'autre côté du lit, Seuls two, Welcome and the Antoine series.

Good afternoon,

L'ennemi intime
http://www.amazon.fr/Lennemi-intime-.../dp/B00138Z9GS

There are also other upcoming French releases of French films whose preliminary specs indicate availability of English subs.

Correction, but L'Ennemi Intime is published by M6 Video, which sure is a partner of Warner France, but in't Warner France per say. What are the upcoming releases you refer to?

Hello again,

M6 are a subdivision of Warner France, as are UGC (hence, the lack of traditional BD menus) and France Television -- Warner authors, manufactures and distributes their films. This is the reason why the Warner logo is on their discs and covers. A partner would be MK2.

Update:

No English subs on the main feature (Coco). English-speakers will have to opt for the upcoming Optimum Home Entertainment UK release.

Thanks for the info. What about German subtitles or German audio? I don't expect either though.

Hello,

Your local German release is coming out in March, 2010.

The French disc, is not German-friendly.

I know, but I don't buy German Warner releases because of our awful oversized rating logo, which destroys the whole cover. I'm pretty stubborn in this regard, and have boycotted all such releases ever since.

Thanks. Just what I was thinking. Too bad, that the same will most likely be the case for 'Un Long Dimanche' .
