Default PS3 to Onkyo 605 - Help needed!

OK, I just got a 605 as my first receiver, but can not get the picture or sound to flow through. I need some advice....

Here is what I have so far....

On the 605 I went under Input/Output Assign and did two things:

1. Under "Monitor Out" I switched "HDMI Monitor" to "Yes"....then I was able to get the set up screen to appear on the TV.

2. Under "HDMI Input" I set "Game/TV" to IN 1.

The HDMI cable going from the PS3 is inputed in "Input 1" on the back of the receiver.

On the PS3 I have these things set:

1. Video Settings:
-BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI): Set at Linear PCM
-BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital): Set at Linear PCM
-BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI): Set at Automatic
-BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI): Set at Automatic

2. Display Settings:
-Video Output Settings: Current Output Resolution at 1080p
-RGB Full Range (HDMI): Set at Full

3. Sound Settings:
-Audio Output Settings, Under the Settings List:
--Connector Type: HDMI
--Output Format:
---Linear PCM 2 Ch. 44.1 kHz
Linear PCM 2 Ch. 48 kHz
Linear PCM 5.1 Ch. 44.1 kHz
Linear PCM 5.1 Ch. 88.2 kHz
Linear PCM 5.1 Ch. 176.4 kHz
Linear PCM 5.1 Ch. 48 kHz
Linear PCM 5.1 Ch. 96 kHz
Linear PCM 5.1 Ch. 192 kHz
All the 5.1 listings I manually added.

These are all connected to a 50" Samsung 1080p Plasma. I can't figure out why the video and audio is not making it through. When I switch to just feeding an HDMI from the 605 to the TV, I can get the visual because my settings screens were appearing on the TV.

Thanks in advance for any helpful tips you all can supply to me!

Oh, and one last thing....I have a 5.1 speaker system in the room, but do not have the speakers connected to the 605 yet. I figured I would first try to get the PS3 connected and then worry about the speakers later.....I will probably post again for helpful hints on getting the speakers up and running at that time too!

well you have to run an hdmi cable from the hdmi out of the 605 to the hdmi in on the tv. You also have to have a hdmi cable from the ps3 to the in1 on the 605. From you post seemed like you only had one cable hooked up properly. Hope this helps

No, when I thought all the settings were good to go, I made sure that I had the PS3 hooked up to the 605 and the 605 hooked up to the TV with HDMIs in their correct places.

I have been cruising some other sites too for help and came across this posting....it seems this person is experiencing the same thing I am:

I just purchased a Onkyo TX-SR605B from ECost . I hooked it up Via HDMI. I hooked up the HDMI cable to the PS3 To input one on the Onkyo and then hooked up the Onkyo to the tv from the HDMI out of the receiver. The settings are for the game/tv from HDMI 1 on the Onkyo. I can see the on screen display from the receiver when I go to the menu on the tv . So I assume that means I'm getting a signal from the Onkyo to the tv . When I turn on the ps3 I get nothing . I check the display on the Onkyo and it says no signal . I can then hook up the PS3 directly to the tv Via HDMI and have a perfect picture and sound . So I know there is a signal coming from the PS3 . The PS3 was previously hooked up to the tv before I got the Onkyo. The Tv Is a Hitachi 1080i so the PS3 when first hooked up to the tv set its self to 1080i output. Is there a setting on the PS3 that is wrong so that the Onkyo doesn't recognize it maybe . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try setting the PS3 input to like DVD or something. Also try HDMI input 2 with a different input name like DVD/VCR/CAB etc.

What model is your TV? Are you sure it supports 24p playback? You may want to try turning the 1080p 24hz setting to off and see if that works for you. I had a similar problem setting up my HK receiver. My TV supports it, but the receiver has issues passing 1080p at 24hz. When I play a Blu with it enabled the video and sound drop out completely. This is a common issue with my receiver that was supposedly fixed in the newer firmware, but I'm not going through the hassle just for that since the PS3 displays 1080p at 60fps and the difference is nearly impossible to differentiate. Turn the setting off and see if you get a picture. If your TV doesn't support 24p the video will not display.

OK, I got the video to come through, but no sound. I do not have my 5.1 speaker system set up yet, so need to use the TVs sound for the moment. Why would the video be going through, but no sound? Do I need to set some other setting on the 605 to allow the sound to pass through and come out of the TV? Thanks to all who have responded so far!

Its not going to pass the sound directly to your TV unless there's a setting in the menu to change it to pass through. Check the manual to see because I don't know if it will do that offhand. Its not something that I would ever use if it can since the whole point of having the receiver is so speakers other than the TV's can be used.

You'll have to hook up your speakers. On the 605, the Receiver either sends to the tv OR to surround speakers. It won't do both (If my memory serves)....and my memory is wrong <see next post>

I've got family out on James Island... I love it down there!

from page 85 of the manual:

Quote:
HDMI Audio Out
This preference determines whether audio received at
the HDMI IN is output by the HDMI OUT. You may
want to turn this preference on if your TV is connected
to the HDMI OUT and you want to listen to the audio
from a component that’s connected to an HDMI IN,
through your TV’s speakers. Normally, this should be set
to Off.
Off: HDMI audio is not output (default).
On: HDMI audio is output.
Notes:
• If On is selected and the signal can be output by the
TV, the AV receiver/AV amplifier will output no
sound through its speakers.
• When TV Control is enabled, this setting is set to
Auto.
• With some TVs and input signals, no sound may be
output even when this setting is set to On.
