But... But... But I thought NEO was going to bring victory to the HD-DVD camp? This just goes to show that there aren't enough players in the market to outsell BD. These are catalog titles as well... so think about what PotC 3 is going to sell. Spidey 3? FF2?

The writing has been on the wall for awile now, HD-DVD doesn't have the content, nor the install base to win this thing in the long run. I'll be very, very surprised if Universal holds out longer than CES 2008. There is just too much money to be had.

You'll have to select which article you'd like to view, named below:

‘Pirates’ Win Showdown, Make ‘Matrix’ Walk the Plank
by THOMAS K. ARNOLD
Date Posted: 5/31/07
It was the battle of the high-def disc titans, and the pirates won.

I love the fact that Pirates on BD outsold Matrix on HD-DUD by a ratio of over 3:1!
Wicked news, keep it up Blu-ray!

Do keep in mind that the retail price of Pirates is roughly 1/3 of the retain price of Matrix and that three titles sell in every box of Matrix.

So the Matrix certainly was a good earner for HD DVD.

Then again, if they were sold separately I bet many would only get the first of the three movies!

Blubaru, you don't have enough smileys, and now I will show why you should add more:

Let us give HDDVD the benefit of the doubt here. 13,900 x 3 = 41,700. This means that the three Matrix movies sold less than the TWO POTC movies! This is giving HDDVD the benefit of the doubt that people who bought these sets actually wanted to buy all three movies. I think we know this isn't the case, but it's always good if you can give someone the benefit of the doubt and still show that you win, like here.

The Animatrix doesn't factor into this, since it was only on the expensive one and it wasn't presented in HD (how dumb is that!)

The two “Pirates” films sold a combined total of nearly 47,000 units, while the higher-priced “Matrix” sets sold about 13,900 units.

Fine get all technical with me 'Deciazulado'! I didn't feel like doing all the precision math involved. HEHE, too lazy to think that hard.

***UPDATE***: Pirates outsells Matrix by a ratio of at least 5:1!

Pirates 1+2: 47,000 units
2 Matrix sets: 13,900 units

Get ready for those Matrix sets to sell more on Blu-ray. And no Pirates for them!

I wouldn't be surprised if Pirates 3 Blu-ray sold more than 47,000 alone (first week) thanks to day and date release with the DVD.

When are we going to get a definitive thread that shows us updated Nielsen numbers without having to hunt through several threads looped together into each other?

I get confused.

Only 13,900? That's rather sad.

Current Amazon rankings:

POTC 2: 32
POTC 1: 38
Ultimate Matrix: 92
Complete Matrix: 115

No holding power for the Matrix either.

Gary

I'm kind of curious how many of those were B&M giveaways with the $100 off HD-A2s?

This is with the ads in theaters, internet and a Buy-day.

Warner, Paramount and Universal should really wake up and smell the ocean.

Here's the html version (just turn off your flash to see this better version)

http://www.homemediaretailing.com/ne...ticle_id=10717

It was the battle of the high-def disc titans, and the pirates won.

In the first of what observers expect will be many high-profile title showdowns, Buena Vista Home Entertainment on May 22 released the first two “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies on Blu-ray Disc, just before the third installment in the blockbuster franchise opened on the big screen.

The same day, Warner Home Video released two “Matrix” collections on the rival HD DVD format.

Within a week, consumers had spent more than $2 million on those releases alone, according to Home Media Magazine market research estimates. The two “Pirates” films sold a combined total of nearly 47,000 units, while the higher-priced “Matrix” sets sold about 13,900 units.
