Default LG 60" Plasma - no love?

I've been reading up on the LG 60 inch plasma (frameless). This thing seems to have a small, but enthusiastic, following. Everything I've read seems to indicate a dependable set w/o burn-in problems with some truly awesome PQs.

At around $3k, this television keeps popping on my radar as a potential choice when I do get ready to pull the trigger.

Anyone have any experiences with these?

Only LG I've ever dealt with didn't look great (no calibration, to be fair) and broke a little after a year (maybe 15, 16 mos).

I stay away now

I have a 50" LG Plasma that I've owned for about a year now. I am completely happy with it. I find the picture to be accurate and real nice.

When the time comes to upgrade I would certainly consider buying another LG. For the size and price of the 60" I would think it's definitely worth looking at. Panasonic and Pioneer seem to be the big players here, but I don't think other TV's should be left out of consideration.

I remember when LG was the NEW big thing (2006). There displays are not of the same quality as others in the 60" range. The price might be attractive, but you get what you pay for(im not saying there bad), & with $3,000 you have a nice window in which many HDTV's will fit.

The LG 60PG60 is an awesome display. It comes out of the box with several nice video settings and two "expert" flexible postions for pro calibration. It does 1080p/24 nicely off of bluray and the frameless design reminds of the mac displays. My 60" choices last year were the Pioneer and LG and although the Pio was a bit nicer, I couldn't justify the xtra $2k for the set. The Panasonic 58s were solid, and I thought the Samsung was the least noteworthy. The models were all in similar price range ($3.5k, except the Pio was about $5.5k) so I was comparing apples to apples.

After about 9 months, no burn in and I feel the picture gets better and better every time I turn it on. Love the plasma picture over LCD, I believe it's much smoother and faithful for movie playback.

That's very nice to hear about the PG60. Does it just accept 1080p/24 , or does it have a multipole of 24 "refresher" feature ?

I can't speak for the plasma, but I can speak for my LG. I have the 52LG70 (52 inch LCD) and I love it! The picture is amazing. I have heard and read good things about the LG Blu-ray players.

I have the Panny 55 Blu ray player spitting out 24p, the TV just takes it and displays it. Honestly, I don't know much else about the refresh rate, except if you press the enter button, the TV tells you what you are viewing (i.e. 1080/24, 1080/24, 720). I thought plasmas don't have "refresh" rates identified like LCDs?

It also accepts the xbox 360 component cables and displays it as 1080 which I understand very few TVs can do. HD gaming looks badass.

I've never seen this TV, but you may want to check out Amazon and CNet for some reviews. I usually visit those sites before buying a TV and the reviews are usually reliable.

Thanks for your input. Your response seems to be indicative of this particular unit (which is the one I had in mind). I have found NO NEGATIVE reviews of this television. This thing appears to be a sleeper.

I think the LG's are pretty good TV's. They have full ISFccc calibration capabilities, which makes them look damn good if you pay for the calibration.

$3k for any LG set would be a waste of money in my opinion. Why wouldn't you go with a bonafide upper end plasma with a budget like that? You could score the 60" Kuro for a couple hundred more, and get a set LEAGUES better than ANY set LG has on the market.

For any HDTV 37" and smaller, i'd consider LG if the price was right. Anything above that, no thanks.

Actually, you won't find the 60" Kuro for less than $4300 shipped. Second, this leagues better statement is ridiculous. Yeah, the Kuro is the cream of the crop, but I think too many people get a little carried away in their comparisons of various sets. True, the LG plasma is not going to have blacks as deep as the Kuro, but no set does. If the Kuro was "leagues" ahead of everybody then they would've made bigger inroads into the market. Fact is, most people will look at a Kuro and say 'wow, that's nice' and then look at the LG and say 'that's pretty good too, and its cheaper' and then make the economical decision. Only true videophiles will heavily scrutinize the set.

I've seen many reviews on LG's newer sets and they all have concluded that they are not only very solid performers, but their black levels equal Samsung's at worst and may be a bit deeper, and Samsung makes a good plasma. You can look at Cnet's review of the LG and you will see that it has very accurate colors as well. It is THX certified by the way. They also noted that even though the blacks aren't as deep as Pioneer and Panasonic offerings they do equal Samsung's.

For $3000 you're not going to find a 60" that's better. You'd have to spend at least $1300 more. Also, keep in mind that the Kuro was originally $5500 so to compare such a high end set to the LG isn't even fair. Now, if the OP was willing to drop down to a 58" then the Panny 800U would be the way to go, and it would save him about $500, but the LG is not a bad set by any means.

People are willing to pay top dollar for the best, but only when the best easily makes all of the rest look inferior. I remember when Sony Trinitron sets were the best. You couldn't go into a store and find anything that came close. It was so obvious and Sony sold them like hotcakes. The Kuro is now the best, but its not thousands of dollars better to the majority of the public. Of course, I would buy one in a heartbeat if I could afford it, but my Panny makes me just as happy.

No TV can display a signal that the connection doesn't support. Component is 720p, period.

Actually, that is incorrect. Butterfly Photo had the 60" Kuro for $3500 about a month ago. I had a buddy buy one.

And anybody that doesn't think the Pioneer is league's ahead of an LG needs to get their head checked. Wayyy more accurate colors, and MUCH better blacks. If you're going to spend $3k+ on a tv, why not invest in one of the best?

First off that was a month ago! With the supply getting lower by the day, and the demand increasing I promise you won't see it that cheap again. And I guess from your perspective 95% of the world needs their heads examined since Pioneer has what...5% of the market. Yeah, the Kuro is better...exactly what I said before, but if it was thousands of dollars better then why didn't you save for one? I see that you have a Samsung 4 series plasma...I mean come on! You can't be that much of a videophile. That LG is actually better than your set in regards to color accuracy AND black level. And don't let me get started on your Toshiba LCD...whoa...blacks are more like green.
