Default Blu-Ray Player Problem

I apologize if this is in the wrong thread, but I searched for a troubleshooting discussion/related topics and found nothing.

My blu-ray player has been having problems playing blu-ray discs that I rent from Blockbuster. It will play all of the previews and will show the movie menu, but when I select Play it will not play the movie. It just sits on a black screen and the blu-ray player reads "BD-ROM." Does anyone know what this means?

Also, Blu-Ray discs that I have purchased will play with no problem. For some reason though, discs that I rent will not play. I tried looking in the manual, but there were no troubleshooting options that dealt with this problem. Does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this?

Thanks,

Which player do you have? Have you updated the firmware on the player to the most recent release?

Do you remember specific titles that you rented which didn't work and specific titles that you purchased which did?

Player model? If the disc's that won't play are ALL from block buster, they could possible have been mistreated... How many BD's are we talking about? Do any of your store bought BD's have issues?

if your renting new release that don't play and your old movies will play, i would check your firmware to make sure you are up to date.

would also help to know what player you are using.

I am currently at work and don't know what model the player is, but I do know it is Sony and it is about 2 years old.

The discs that I had problems with were Quantum of Solace, that new alien one with Keanue Reeves, I forget the name of the movie, and the Transporter 3, all of which were from Blockbuster, but they appeared to be in good condition.

The discs that I purchased and that play are the new indiana jones, 3:10 to Yuma, the new Batman, etc.

Sounds like you need a firmware update for the new discs.

if it is a 2 year old player and Sony must be Sony BDP-S300 go and update your firmware.

Here it is the link to Download the firmware for BDP-S300 :https://www.blu-ray.com/firmware/firmware.php?id=10

Hey Sammy he mentioned that he have an old player ,so he was happy with his old movies until he rent the most sophisticated and demanding titles based on BD-Live,an updated firmware can solve his problem.

I would agree with the other poster's that it is a firmware issue, probably. You could rent one of the movies you own, that you know works, and see if it plays. I know it's a waste of $4.99 but it would at least tell you if it's the rented discs, or the player.

Also, consider yourself lucky that The Day the Earth Stood Still didn't play. The BD-ROM message would be better than that movie!

Thanks for all of the help everyone.

However, I do have one more question. I hate to ask it, becasue its probably a stupid question, but how do I implement the firmware update from my home pc to my blu-ray player? Is there even a way to link my blu-ray player to my pc?

Thanks guys,

I know. I just thought I'd raz those that would case on Samsung players. I have had no problems with mine whatsoever and Samsung has upgraded the f/w on a regular and consistant basis to maintain compatibility with the newest movies and provide netflix and then HD netflix streaming.

Thanks guys,
For mine, you go to samsung's support page and download it to either USB or burn it to a CD then follow the instructions that can be downloaded along with the f/w *.zip file... Until this last time when I used the ethernet directly through the player (I didn't have the ethernet connected to the player yet for the first two updates that I did so I used the USB method).

Go to (is it a sony?) the manufacturer's web site and search for the latest firmware file and follow the manufacturer's instructions for updating the player.
