Default "Foolproof" Director?

Is there a such thing? A Director that can do no wrong? Look no body is perfect we all know that, and I'm not saying that your pick will be either...but as far as style, vision, and talent, who comes the closest?

If you are curious about my pick, it would have to be Martin Scorsese. Never fails, IMHO.

I think most have at least one hole in their resume after so long. Tarantino does, Scorsese has Gangs of New York, Spielberg does, etc.

Currently the biggest director without any obvious duds is Christopher Nolan or Peter Jackson.

what would be your hole for Tarantino and Spielberg? not that I'm disagreeing I'm just curious.

No director has pleased me 100% of the time, but I don't require that high of a percentage to guarantee I'll see every movie they release from here on.

some of my favorites and the movies I didn't like...

David Fincher - The Game (haven't seen benjamin button)
Robert Rodriguez - Spy Kids movies (thought I understand why he made them and I'm glad he did)
Kevin Smith (though it's his writing I like, not his directing per se) - Jersey Girl (not terrible but not good)

uhhhmmm I have many more favorites but I can't thnk of anything to add right now

Guillermo del Toro?

I've seen Both Hellboys, Blade 2, Pan's Labyrinth, and The Devil's Backbone.

They might not all be the best movies but I enjoyed them.

Uhh wasn't too big on Kill Bill Volume 2 or Death Proof, loved his other ones though. Never saw Jackie Brown.

Spielbergo... hmm, War of the Worlds? It was what it was though, popcorn flick.

Spielberg is AI. For Tarantino it's Death Proof. I like the concept of it but it fails as a followup to Planet Terror. I need to see the extended stand alone version.

What's wrong with The Game?

Actually the reason Lucas didn't get my vote since that was the only movie by him that I don't absolutely love.

What's wrong with The Game?
It just didn't work for me at all. I'd give it a second chance just because I'm a Fincher fan but the whole suspense of the movie never grabbed me and I didn't like the ending. that is, it just seemed like
[Show spoiler]they explained things away that really couldn't have worked or were far too dangerous for it to be a game
and that just ruined the illusion of a movie taht I already wasn't that into.

just my reaction though. I have a friend who loves it... if this were some official list where we voted I imagine benjamin button would be his weakest movie.

see the longer death proof. the mood is very different from planet terror but IMO it's the better movie.

and I haven't seen AI but I have plenty of Spielberg movies I'm not crazy about. that's a different discussion though

hmm? I remember somewhat liking the end, or at least I liked it as much as I liked the rest of the movie. (not very much)

Sam Raimi is pretty solid to me. That being said, I've only seen The Evil Dead and Spider Man trilogies.

Please don't get me started on Sam Raimi and his latest sham of a TV Series 'Legend of the Seeker'.

Technically he's executive producer of that and not the director. I guess it's still largely his fault.

I've only seen two episodes so I don't know enough about the show to discuss it.

Who is directing it then if its not Sam Raimi?

Edit:
Appears to be multiple people that switch off being the director depending on the episode:
Michael Hurst, Mark Beesley, Charlie Haskell, Chris Martin-Jones, Garth Maxwell, Andrew Merrifield, Geoffrey Cawthron, Johnathon Brough, Jesse Warn.

No wonder I never know whats going on with the show whether or not I'm going to like the episode or not.
