Default Warner launches "Red2Blu" trade-in program

For only $4.95 per title + $6.95 per order you can exchange up to 25 HD DVDs for "new industry-leading Blu-ray Discs." And you don't even need to send the discs or cases - only the sleeves! Plus you get a $15 off coupon for a purchase of $50 or more at wbshop.

You can access it here. The full rules are here.

Thats cool I guess but what would they do with just the sleaves, and not the whole package. I mean serisouly it's kinda cool that they are willing to let you trade in towards better for a small price. but still why only hand in the artwork sleave and nothing elase. You will still have the case, and the disc which isn't relly trading at all. Am I missing something here.

It's easier to get rid of a bunch of cardboard (paper) cover art than a bunch of HD DVDs. This is not to mention the cost of shipping said HD DVDs back!

Wonder if they'll do a similar trade in for 'crappy' Warner Blus when they start re-releasing films with a better video encode and lossless audio so people don't have to double-dip on certain films?

Hmmm....

Zellars by my house has a huge bin full of HDDVD for $2.99 each... I could go buy 25 for $74.75, send them in costing me $130.70... So in total $205.45 for 25 blus or $8.21 a piece. Then turn around and sell the HDDVD discs to my buddy with a player....

Does this work for Canadian residents?

edit: Nevermind my question was just answered above... too bad, this could have worked out well.

This seems ridiculously over-priced to me. Warner already got people's money once... $5 per movie, $7 shipping?

Please, you want to charge a couple bucks per movie (2-3), then 2-3 bucks to ship media mail, fine.

I think this is certainly NOT the apologetic reconciliation move it should be.

Now granted, H-DuDders should have known better than to go Red but I think they should have aimed the price point for this program a little lower...

The shipping fee is flat.

You could send in 25 discs (that's all the promotion is good for) and have them all returned for the $5 shipping fee. (If I read it right.)

I'm glad I avoided HD DuD from the start... If I had some though I would be all over this and then I would take the HD DUD's to the goodwill or just chuck them in the trash depending on the mood I was in.

I would want them gone... they were such a mistake,.. I have sympathy for people who bought into them. (Unless they have Fast Times in HD... then I'm likely jealous or something but it will come to Blu Ray eventually.)

Warner is still going to come out on top because of this. Their profit off of these bluray discs is going to be a little lower. But now they look like the simpathetic company that takes care of their customers. It's a brilliant scheme by their marketing dept.

well then don't join it, it is a nice move that they did not have to do. Plus considering you can go out and get HD DVD for dirt cheap, the price could still be less then getting the BD in the store. (like Master 8ball pointed out)

By sending only the sleeves, Warner is letting the owners to still enjoy the HD DVD while also enjoying the BD.

It is cool that they are doing this. I just wish it had been a little bit sooner.

The WB titles that I have on HD-DVD are the Ultimate Matrix Collection, the Oceans 11, 12, 13 collection, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Both of the collections I have since rebought on Blu-Ray (with the real kicker being that I just bought the Oceans set within the last few weeks. I did get a decent deal on it, but not as good as I would have gotten otherwise).

That being said, I may still send these in since the sets come out to be a really good price with this deal, and I could always use them for gifts. My mom and step-dad just got an HDTV and Blu-Ray player back in early December, and don't have many movies on Blu-Ray yet (I think they basically have the Pirates Trilogy and my significantly younger sister has Twilight on Blu-Ray). And my step-dad is a huge Matrix fan. So, that set could make a good father's day gift.

And I could hang onto the Oceans set for a future gift or something.

Here's also something interesting that I noticed.

For the Oceans collection set, you don't have to send in the covers for all of the movies. You just have to send in flimsy outer sleeve that goes over the box-set box to get the Blu-Ray set.

But, they are also offering exchanges on the individual movies. And anyone who bought the collection set will also have the individual movie covers. So, those could also be sent in to get the movies as well (they just wouldn't be in a set-box, but of course they could always just be put in the set-box that came with the HD-DVD version, since once that outer sleeve is removed, the box is identical, with no format logos, for both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray versions).

Now, I'm sure that WB wouldn't allow one person to do this, but I don't see why someone else from a different household couldn't benefit from it.

I noticed something similar with the Ultimate Matrix set. For the whole set, you have to send in the carboard piece that comes off of the box with the barcode on it (which I actually think is kind of stupid because most people likely threw that away when they opened the let... luckily mine is still laying around), but you can also send in the cover from just the first movie and get the 10th anniversary digibook version in exchange for it.

I would imagine something similar can be done with those "Best of HD-DVD" mutli-movie box sets as well.

He means he wants the Ultimate Matrix collection on blu-ray in exchange for the HD DVD Matrix trilogy. Wrong place to post this though...
