Default Superman game cancelled

Hi,

I was poking around the net for news of a Superman PS3 game and found the following:

http://www.unseen64.net/2009/03/09/s...ps3-cancelled/

Based on the pics and trailer this might of been decent. Any word of a Superman game coming for the PS3 before a movie is done?

Thanks

Superman games are always weird because he's always too weak, and it's weird to see Supes getting beaten by street thugs. At the same time, if they actually give the player the full extent of Supes's powers, the game would be pretty darn boring.

Well that sucks. That still of Doomsday looks pretty sweet. I had high hopes for Superman Returns, but . . . yeah. The concept of the life bar being for the city was pretty cool, but the game itself was repetitive as hell. The free roaming aspect of it was pretty good fun, as was just flying around, but I've always wished they made a Superman game where you can add some flair to the flying, like rolls and just better animation so that he changes positions while flying. Little things.

Wow, that was a rant. But yeah, that's too bad

I didn't like how you were forced into fighting enemies in the free-roaming Metropolis. I'd have much preferred something more along the lines of the Spider-Man games.

That's the traditional problem with invulnerable main characters.

I talked to the devs of the last Superman game and that's exactly what they said. Then they described a way to play the game by saving the city constantly without causing too much destruction. So the game is based on how well you protect instead of it being a game where you have to worry about dying. Seemed to me people want more God Of War and less running around worrying about a building that could fall on people.

Technically speaking though Superman is vulnerable to magic (well also kryptnite...did I spell that right?). Maybe they should create a game where the enemy is magic based therefore Superman can get hurt but can also use all his powers without making the game too easy.

Another option would be a plot to weaken or change the color of the sun's rays as the ray's of the yellow sun are what make superman so powerful. They could probably mine that one fairly well at least once - too many times and it would probably seem silly.

You could also just put Superman on War World or something. The tutorial level could take place on old Krypton, where you play as Jor-El and get used to the game mechanics.

Or just use Doomsday... apparently he can hurt Supes.

If it were me designing the game, it would be more of a trial-and-error puzzler with the occasional boss battle. "Three guys are robbing a bank... how do you take them down without any casualties using super speed, heat vision, and strength?" Make the environments destructible and interactive, so they become part of the puzzle. Each mission would have multiple possible solutions. Or you could smash a support beam, kill everyone, and have to redo the mission (after reversing the earth's rotation, obviously). It'd be a lot like GTA in terms of mission structure.

Yeah, developers have never gotten it right. Regular missions have to deal more with making the right decisions and taking action to save citizens without casualties. Ex. collapsing bridge during rush hour traffic or something else that puts the citizens of Metropolis in peril. Then leave mega boss battles with the likes of Doomsday to challenge Superman one-on-one. Heck, videogame versions have never found an effective way to utilize Kryptonite. At least using Kryptonite ocassionally would much better explain how a mere mortal criminal could whup up on Superman.

Either way, it's probably better that the game has been cancelled. Factor 5 bit the dust after not coming through with Lair, and they were probably going to use the same Sixaxis control scheme on Superman. The dev team working on Arkham Asylum should be handed the Superman license as well.

Maybe Superman could be DLC for Lair. He could ride on a dragon.

That might be entertaining.

I've bought one Superman game and that was for the Atari 2600. Haven't seen much improvement since.
