Default Sony Won't 'Rule Out' PS3 Price Reduction

The following is rumors only and not based on facts

Looks like the rumors might be true. This October possible a new model PS3 with a 80GB or larger hard drive might hit the market with a $100 price reduction. The new PS3 would also have less components since it would be using integrated components. Also the new model would do a software emulation for PS1 and PS2 games instead of a hardware emulation.

Quote
"Sony does not rule out the possibility of lowering the price" of the PS3, Sony president Ryoji Chubachi told the daily Yomiuri Shimbun. He went on to say that the company would make a "full assessment" of the competitive situation in the game market, and then make a decision.”

Default A nice price drop...

Could you imagine a nice price drop to $399 for Christmas this year? I could see PS3s flying off the shelves as buyers scooped them up along with several Blu-ray movies (imagine a buy-5 get-1-free deal here). Sony could still have an explosion in sales on the PS3 to counter 360 sales. Many of my students that are 360 owners want the PS3 but just can't convince their parents at the current price (or can't find the $ on their own for a system and a couple games). I have a feeling that Sony has some nice surprises in store for this holiday season.

i highly doubt a significant price drop will occur any time soon.. sony is already losing a lot of money for each PS3 produced. But i agree, it would be nice to have it priced so that more people can buy it.. it would help Blu-ray sales a lot and i'm down with that!

399 is a bit much....I expect 499 and they will be easier to find for the 'desperate' parents....

If they're already brining out $499 standlone players...I could see the 60 gig PS3 matching that, but not any lower.

I'd love to see it happen.

They aren't going to lower it to even $400. They are losing a lot of money right now. I think the technology came too soon with the PS3. To put a Blu-ray player into the system when Blu-Ray is just coming out was before its time for a video game system in my opinion. If they could make a cheaper PS3 without the Blu-Ray drive, then they would sell more. I don't know a lot about them but I think some of the games are on Blu-Ray discs? So putting a different/cheaper drive wouldn't be good.

Just picked up my 2nd one this week. Rather have it now than wait for a potential price drop.

All PS3 games are BD-ROMs. Without the Blu-Ray drive, nothing new would play on it.

Diode production is growing, and the processors get cheaper with time; PS3s will drop in price soon enough.
