Default Formatting HDD for PS3 Use

I saw the other thread about upgrading your HDD, but it didn't exactly help. I am about to upgrade my PS3's HDD to 160GB, but I got a few questions.
I recently upgraded my MacBook's HDD to 320GB so I have no use for the stock 160GB HDD anymore. The MacBook's HDD is HFS Journalled if that's important. What kind of format does the PS3 use? How do I format my HDD to the PS3's one? Can I transfer my PS3's data to my used FAT32 external? Thanks!

It's a proprietary one with no known name. Really, I'm not kidding.

Just put it in the caddy - I heard the non-BC PS3 uses no metal caddy - and follow the instructions on your screen.

Yes you can. To upgrade your PS3 HDD, follow these steps.

1) Backup the data on your PS3 using an external FAT32 drive. It'll take an hour or so, according to those who have done this. If yours is a brand new PS3 or you don't mind losing the data, skip this step.

2) Switch the drive to the one you want to upgrade to. The PS3 will format the drive for you.

3) If you did step 1, then you need to do this step. Restore the data. It'll take another hour. And then you're done.

If all you're backing up is save data then you can just hook up a thumb drive and "copy" from the XMB
