Default THX Certification of High-Def Discs Comes to Europe; Is U.S. Next?

It would be great to have THX certified BLU-RAY discs one day. The costs of the discs would be more expensive but one is guaranteed in theory a certain level of quality for picture and sound quality. I am all for THX certified BLU-RAY discs.

THX is notorious for using edge enhancement. Hopefully that won't be the case on Blu-Ray.

THX does nothing of the sort. They certify the equipment & processes used in transferring and mastering a title. If there is edge enhancement it's on the part of the studio making the transfer.

Lionsgate's "T2" was actually the first THX certified BD (HD format) disc anyway. "HiDef Digest" gets it wrong again.

When THX started loaning out their name for PC speakers they lost all credibility. Who cares anyways? It's all marketing.

Um, why exactly?

Folks here are stunned when I reveal what my GigaWorks 7.1 system can do.

No, when THX appears on a Bose product, THEN they'll have lost all credibility

As long as they pass the same tests as everyone else, and I seriously doubt there's enough money in certification for it to be worth it to them to sell out, what's the wrong with them certifiying products as the best possible in their class?

Default Pan's Labyrinth on HD-DVD with THX! What about Blu-ray?

Quote:
In a possible indicator of things to come for the U.S. high-def market, the European HD DVD release of 'Pan's Labyrinth' will carry THX-certification, making it the first-ever next-gen title to receive the high-end seal of approval.

Warner is distributing New Line in the US, so yes they're neutral.
I think the THX on the european (must be the german release) Pan's Labyrinth is just vor marketing...

I could care less about THX. I've seen plenty of movies that were not "THX approved" that looked fantastic, and others that were THX approved that looked just O.K. I believe they even once shipped some discs (early in the DVD era) that were defective. I can't remember the movie. Anyway, that's great if they want to put their collective stamp of approval on a movie, but it hardly makes me sit up and reconsider my purchase.

THX certification has been essentially pointless on DVD. Hopefully in high def it might mean something again. But I wouldn't bet on it.

I like THX certification in audio components. But, I haven't found much use for it with video componentes or software. With DVD, THX certified discs have ranged from some of the best on the market, to some of the absolute worst, and have had just as many player incompatibility issues. Hopefully things will change with high def. But, I wouldn't bet on it. About the only worthwhile thing I see coming from a THX certified BD, would be some mighty cool trailers.

Anyone remember the crappy Highlander DVD that was THX certified? Yeah, that one. I'd say THX has no credibility left. They did their job back in the 80s when there were a lot of movie theaters with crappy sound systems, but these days the point is gone.

THX is just a quality standard, just like ITIL, ISO, Six Sigma and the list continues, only it applies to AV. The standard and concept is a great one, however not everyone manages to implement it to deliver the best out comes. It just means the company will have had to go through a number of tick the box's on the product they are applying THX to. If you have dodgy box's to tick guess what the end product will be dodgy. If applied the way it's designed the end product should be of a consistently high standard.

Personally, I use THX certified recievers because of the modes they have (Select2, Game, Music, ect.). But when it comes to Blu-Rays, I don't really see what they could do... unless they have a standard thing where they say "the bit rate of the movie cannot pass below blah blah" and "The audio needs to be uncompressed in some form" but that's about it. It doesn't nesisarilly mean anything is different, it's just a way for a consumer to know that it actually has a high bit rate for the picture, uncompressed audio, and it passed THX's tests...
