Default SVS Question?

I've had my sub for 5+ years, it's a Definitive Technology PF15. It has been a very good sub in my opinion and I've enjoyed it. I was just thinking of some day in the not too distant future of replacing it.

I hear good things about SVS Cylinder Subs. Would something like the 25-31PCi or PC12-NSD blow my current sub out of the water?

Thanks in advance for ideas and/or suggestions.

Well, here's the catch about this - people who have heard the DefTech 15" have most likely never heard a SVS subwoofer, and vice versa. And those who currently own the famous SVS cylinders, have most likely never heard of any DefTech subwoofers outside of the Supercubes and ProSubs. What might end up happening is that perhaps current SVS sub owners might come in and say "Of course, SVS rules, " or "I love my SVS, I would recommend it" - but the issue with this is that we all think our own equipment is the greatest thing since sliced bread! Without having listened to both subwoofers, it is impossible to discern any differences - all we can go by is spec sheets, and those are notoriously unreliable when it comes to distinguishing how they would sound.

Don't get me wrong, the SVS cylinders are top-notch, excellent quality subwoofers that provide incredible amounts of bass (this is all based on reading reviews, I have never actually heard an SVS subwoofer) - but whether or not it would blow your current 15" DefTech is a question I'm not sure anyone here could answer! Does SVS offer an in-home trial program? If so, that's what I would recommend!

The Definitive Technology PF15 was a pretty good subwoofer for its time. If I am not mistaken, it came out in 1997. The newer SVS subwoofers are going to be better. However, I never use statements like "blow your subwoofer out of the water".

Instead of buying a new subwoofer, you can easily replace the old 15" driver with a new one. You may be able to significantly improve the performance of your sub.

This is the driver I recommend: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=295-468

Other 15" drivers: http://www.parts-express.com/wizards...TOKEN=54503901

Having heard both subs and currently own a PB 13 Ultra....You can assume the SVS will outperform the outdated DT. That being said, depending on the one you choose has a lot to do with what you will get. Since there is no way to audition an SVS (unless you know someone with the model you are looking for and you can bring it in your home) you are stuck with opinions like mine. Do yourself a favor and call SVS and talk to Eric, he can look at your room dimensions and help you select the right sub for the room. You can buy anyone and try it out...if you don't like it, you can send it back minus freight. He talked me out of the SB12...I am so glad he did.

I auditioned the JL Audio line locally and wanted the punch they provided, my Ultra met every expectation I had. For the money you won't find a better value in any sub in their class...Heart stopping Bass! (My opinion)

Seriously look at the PC Ultra if you want the small footprint they have. It will "blow your DT out of the water".

You can audition, you just might have to pay the return shipping. I have a 20-39 PC+ and it's fabulous. However, I have not heard the sub OP currently has so I can't make a direct comparison.

My guess is that the entry level cylinders will not "blow it out of the water" but will at least rival it or be a tad better. Again, I have not heard the OP's sub, I'm just guessing from my experience with other Def Tech subs.

@ Popcornninja, if you ever upgrade, do it right!!! If you are interested in SVS, give them a call and they will do a great job of selling you the right sub. They tried to talk me out of the plus and just go with the PCi so you know they won't try to oversell you purely for profit. I ultimately went with the plus becuase I will be moving to a larger living room in the near future, plus it's always nice you know you can go louder

I appreciate the insight from all of you. I've been around audio/video awhile but do not have the extensive knowledge or the experience that some of you members have. I appreciate everyone in the forums that helps me out.

My DT sub is still a solid sub but every once in a while I just feel that need to upgrade some pieces. I'll give SVS a call and see what they have to say.
