Default wife situation

Just a show of hands of members whose wives come in the way of big purchases.

Thankfully, not mine. She doesn;t even care if I tell her before I buy something.

Examples:
In '06 she went to the grocery store on a Saturday morning and when she got home I told her I bought a 50" plasma. We hadn't even discussed getting a new TV at that point. Her response was "cool".

In 2000, 3 weeks before we got married (and were paying for our own wedding), I got home and told her I put a deposit down on a BMW motorcycle but I would cancel the order if she wanted. She asked why I would want to cnacel it.

This past Friday I wanted a new lens for my SLR. She didn't ask me why or how much, she jsut said order it. When I told her we could make it my birthday present, she said "That's boring...it's not happening".

I could go on an on. From my speakers to buying 2 cars in 4 hours...she never blinks. And we have zero credit card debt.

depends....i've already told my wife when i start to purchase my HT, she has no say in what i get or how much it costs.....the only reason i was able to do this is b/c my side business money is paying for it and since i'm the one that does all the work, i get to say how it's spent.

before my HT is bought, she's gonna have the house resided and insulated and the main level bathroom redone....so i get to spend some money on myself for once!!!

My wife is the bread winner and we keep all of our bills seperately. I work, but she makes a good bit more than I do. So, we keep everything seperate, I moved in with her into her house, so she has continued to pay the mortgage herself. We only have the refi'd mortgage as a joint debt, everything else I have is seperate from her. This means seperate bank accounts and thus seperate money to spend. I pay for some of the mutual items (groceries, diapers, etc...) and she pays for the electric, gas, water, etc... Works out real well and I never have to tell her what I want to do or buy and neither does she, as long as we don't sacrifice any necessities or things for the kids. If all that is taken care of, and always is, i can spend whatever extra $ I have without worry....

I do see a lot of guys saying "Gotta check with the wife" or "Hopefully the wife doesn't know" when it comes to purchasing stuff.

I'm probably going to be in the same situation once I'm married too

I think it's pretty obvious he got denied on buying something he had his mind set on.

And Cosmo kid it's pretty easy when you have a lot of money which apparently you do if those are your spending habits, for the rest of us in reality ville that does not happen the way you portray it. Lets see how it would go if buying that BMW bike meant her not buying anything for herself for the next 5 months and see how that goes for you.

Was trying to buy a 60" Elite. She started to ramble on how we are moving to a bigger house, etc... and how there are more important things to buy (which there isnt).

My wife doesn't complain too much.

We keep our bills and accounts separate. Her credit rating sucks...I don't want it ruining mine...Basically I pay just about everything: mortgage, taxes, insurance, food and most utilities. She works, chips in here & there but its never enough. Doesn't save any money either. We don't have kids or car payments.. .... I'm always running short. Anytime I bring it up, it turns into an argument...I usually don't bother anymore....

It sure doesn't hurt that I work for a bank, so we do get some great benefits with rates and things.

But believe it or not, I work as a Paralegal in the Commercial Loan Documentation area and she is an elementary school teacher and makes almost twice as much as me!

If you are indeed THE Tim Horton, then why does it matter? You could put a 60" in every room.

I think the context matters though. Do you already have a 52" TV, and were hoping to upgrade? In that case I can see why someone's wife would object to it. But if you don't already have a nice big TV, I'd put up a fight, or at least try to compromise on something.

A big reason why I have avoided serious relationships is because I don't want to ask about buying stuff. If I want something and I can afford it I'll buy it. I suppose as I'm entering my upper-20s and own most of the stuff I want I should focus on finding a wife, but right now it's fun being able to do what I want.

i run all of the finances in our house, me & my wife have joint everything, bought the house in both of our names, both names on the car/truck loans, all my wife says is "as long as we can afford it, alright."

the only debt we have that i wish we didn't is the best buy card balance, about $1800...not to bad but i wish it wasn't there. my wife needed a laptop for school and i bought my HDTV and blu-ray player last summer. that s/b gone by the end of the year though, for now it's interest free, that's the only reason i bought my tv.

I got divorced (after 6 months!) because we had joint accounts, and all she did was spend "our" money ( I made a lot more than my first wife but she spent it no problem) and want to know what I actually did spend things on, etc.... So, I did have it the other way....and in fact, I lived and learned. I would never put my money together again.....to me, that's a recipe for disaster based on experience. My new marriage (5 years now) is built on trust and it works wonderfully. To me, an incapability to keep accounts seperate in some manner, sounds like there is some kind of underlying trust issue.
