Terminator Gets New Slip-Cover; No New Extras
Posted March 30, 2009 09:57 AM by Josh Dreuth In an early announcement to retailers, MGM Home Entertainment in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring 'The Terminator (Lenticular Cover)' to Blu-ray on May 12th, day-and-date with the DVD re-issue and one week before Lionsgate's new 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition)' Blu-ray. According to our good friend Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits, MGM is simply re-issuing the existing disc with a new lenticular cover, so nothing new. The next obvious question becomes, when will be see a proper release for 'Terminator 3'? Japan may have already provided a hint, with Warner Home Video releasing a Dolby TrueHD version of the release there on June 5th. Hopefully we'll hear of a US release soon. So much for replacing the one I have, oh well. ![]() |

The first Terminator release wasn't terrible, especially considering it came out in 2006. While many harshly critique the transfer, in all honesty The Terminator is a rough-looking film and most likely can't look much better. I will be curious to see what Lowry does, as they'll almost definitely be able to make it look a little better, but it's not like the first release was a botched job. A legitimate complaint with the first disc, however, was the lack of the original mono soundtrack, as some of the re-done effects were pretty bad.
The full restoration isn't complete yet, so I'm glad they didn't rush it. This is just a new slipcover to tie into the T4 movie release, just like Paramount put all those Academy Award slipcovers on their titles to tie into the hype of the most recent Oscars. I really don't see this as a "double-dip" as there's no reason for any owners of the previous disc to buy it - it's basically just a new SKU in the system so it'll show up in the "New Release" section and maybe attract the attention of people who don't already own it. The actual restored disc will come out when it is ready, and then we can judge whether Fox/MGM have created a valid double-dip. |
