Default LOL @ Pachter: No New Game Consoles Until 2013, If Ever

http://tech.yahoo.com/news/pcworld/2...ntil2013ifever

Quote:
Are we gaming in the final days? The waning moments? The terminal ticks on some ominous, premonitory tech-trending clock? Are all the breathless pundits prognosticating about Xbox 720's and PlayStation 4's just the blithe leading the blind? Are the days of console cycles and turbulent software development kit refreshes on the verge of evanescence?

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter raises at least the ghost of that question in his May 2009 monthly gaming rundown. Moreover, he says he doesn't expect to see the next round of consoles arriving earlier than 2013. Cue pause followed by creepy organ music to an ominously appended "if at all."

Wagging his finger at investors who "remain convinced that industry growth will peak in 2009," Pachter says fiddlesticks, calling the notion video game software sales always peak in a console cycle's fourth year an "urban legend."

We note that video game software sales typically peak in the year prior to the introduction of a new generation console, as many consumers begin to slow purchases in anticipation of purchasing a new console the next year. We do not expect a “new” console in 2010 (other than the long-rumored high definition Wii, which is likely to upgrade the Wii to current console technology). We do not expect the “next” generation to begin before 2013, if at all .

i could see M$ waiting until 2012 at the latest to release the nextbox, and sony wont want to get beat to the puch again so they will probably release the console in 2012 or whenever M$ is planning a release

LOL yeah sure i mean when a 100$ ATI HD4770 run you're most popular game (COD4/5) at 60fps at 1200p with Fsaa and AF. It's really time to think to make a new machine...

Not likely. It's been 2 1/2 years into it's life and it's not even at the PS2's launch price yet.

Hearing how unreliable some PS3 are on this forum due to them breaking down in less than 5 years. I hear some forum member Ps3 dying in 1-2 years . Sony will continue to manufacture PS3 in the next 10 years but for consumer we HOPE OUR system will last 10 years. I believe it will be a technological miracle if it does.

Oh please. You don't hear about the people who's consoles keep working because there's no need to mention it...my launch 60 Gig has had zero issues, but I have no reason to come on here and post about it.

Pachter makes alot of sense. The technological jumps every console gen now will no longer be dealmakers. And with the huge cost of games the big publishers will definately want to milk it for aslong as possible. From now on as Nintendo proved graphics wont be the difference maker. Also with the ps3 every year from now on Blu Ray will become more influential for PS3 buyers as HD becomes more widespread and prices come down.

if they let consoles lag so far behind the pc market, nobody would stick with consoles

I have no idea where you get your information from. Failure rate for PS3 is like 2% or less.

I don't, PS2 was pretty dam far behind PC's for most of its life, same with the Xbox and Cube. PC's simply don't have the content consoles have. Plus the appeal is a lot different for a lot of people.

There is no way that Sony sticks to this idea of the PS3 lasting that long as the primary console.

It might be built for 10 years, but PS4 will come out either before or at the same time as the rest of the next generation. Unless they wants to lose another round.

Disagree. Graphics are at such a level now that only the very hardcore will be heading for the new consoles unless there's real difference makers besides power compared to this gen. Kaz Hirai etc still think the PS3 will break a 100million and with my limited knowledge i agree. Once the price tumbles there's lots Sony can do.

To add to your point...

New PC games demand upgrades almost continuously. A Gaming PC will last a year or two at best.

Consoles have what they have. I buy it, and can use it until they stop making games for it...

Try using a PC from 5 years ago to play the top games out now... aint gonna happen. My PS3 will still be hucking great games in 3 years.

but we knew a new generation was coming, so there was no reason to care how far behind they were. if they stick to this gen forever..why would anyone stay?
