Default is Blu-ray spec final- what is there to come

i am currently using a pioneer drive with power dvd in my pc.

i need to upgrade the software in order to get more features (mainly lossless audio). i am however not willing to pay 100 dollars to upgrade powerdvd.

i would rather buy a standalone blu ray player.

if i got something like a sony bdp-350, will that last me for the next 5 years or is the blu ray format still emerging codec and profile wise?

i'm willing shell out more for the bdp-550, if that has everything that will last me through the blu ray years.

I know one can firmware upgrade these models, but you can't add hardware decoding if you know what i mean.

thx

My guess is that the BD years will be much more then 5. As to the question it is a bit difficult. BD specs where always finished. Any BD disk will play in any BD player, even the most basic. On the other hand BD has had different profiles. And with a simple BD 1.0 player you won't be able to access bonus view features (PiP) or BD-live (stuff on the internet). The BDA is now working on a 3D profile (real 3D, not the red/blue kind) if or when it will be defined who knows. Who knows what other features (like bonus view, live, 3D) will eventually be added. The only things for sure are: 1) that no matter how BD evolves the basic movie will always play in a BD player (that is the definition of a format); 2) 3D is most likely coming and no wonder what player you get for real 3D you will need a new TV ; 3) 3D is still a few years away

The most future-proof BD player is the Sony PS3. It gets frequent updates and is the test player that many firms use to test their Blu-rays on.

Agreed. This is the reason I'm still sticking to my PS3 as Blu-ray player: It's always one of the first to get firmware updates and it's easy to put in a new HDD, which is convenient to store BD-Live downloaded stuff on (as opposed to SD-cards that some players use)

As for the question, I believe we won't see a profile update in the immediate future but I also believe we haven't reach Blu-ray's final profile yet.

I disagree. The US PS3 doesn't even support the existing Blu-ray specs. They don't support Blu-rays containing 50i content. Yet other US players, like the Samsungs do support the current Blu-ray specs, including 50i. I think the most future-proof players are the ones that support the existing specs.

US PS3 does support 50i via update 2.50 out now.

That's good news. It didn't take them too many years. The article says it has a 50hz output setting - I assume it can decode 50hz content and output that at 60hz like the Samsung's can - for the US TVs that don't support 50hz?

Hopefully the remaining US player manufacturers will decide to support the Blu-ray specs too.

PS: Are you sure that's the US PS3s that have this update and not just the UK ones?

So how do you enable it on the US PS3? It is supposed to be under Video Settings but I can not find it. I have the newest software 2.76, so what is going on?

I just double checked the US Playstation site. The US PS3 does NOT include the 50hz Video Output option.

yeah, looks like engadget mixed them up with the UK update... don't see a real need for this in the US though, since this is really for PAL isn't it? I don't see sony rushing into this since it would be a small % that wants or needs this. BUT, thats another nice thing about the PS3, it can be done if the need/want is there. Its not a feature simply because the US PS3 can't, it just hasn't been needed yet.

Of course there is a need for it, and people are asking for it to be made compatible with the Blu-ray specs - See Penton's insider thread. It would help the European studios as well as consumers in the US and Europe. US Samsung players support it, so do Oppo and LG. The US PS3s don't, so they don't even support the current specs never mind future ones.

The blu ray years will last as long as it takes the digital download field to get its act together. I know this is a touchy subject around these parts, but the vast majority of people prefer the easiest method to obtain their media. Whether it takes 5-10 years to see BD quality downloads, that is when our prized Blu's will meet their maker.

Blu-Ray will be the final mass market format that will be on an optical disc. I personally believe an even higher quality format will come along but the difference will be very minimal and only usefull to a select few and thus be more like what laser disc was vs vhs. I think well se blu ray's for a long time, and slowly move over to downloads/flash discs. Thought that will be a long time away and I doubt its quality will be better then blu rays (probably will eventually be the same, but this is a long time away).

The only thing I could see changine this is the nex 'new' thing in cinema, whatever that may be.
