Default Pioneer BDP-09FD is the best BLU-RAY player in terms of build quality (Widescreen mag

Widescreen Review Issue 140 May/June 2009 (Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD reveiw) pages 40-43.

According to the Widescreen magazine review, the Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD is currently the best quality BLU-RAY player yet in terms of build quality, analog video output, and sound quality performance. The BDP-09FD is Pioneers first profile 2.0 BD-LIVE player and it includes 4GB of built in memory for BD-LIVE which is a nice feature. Most BLU-RAY players require consumers to purchase external memory to use BD-LIVE. The Pioneer also has two HDMI outputs so one can be sent to the display and the other to the surround sound receiver. Having two HDMI outputs is a nice and unique feature on a BLU-RAY player.

The Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD is not perfect. Hopefully future models will offer faster load times and navigation comparable to the Sony PS3. The latest LG BLU-RAY players and Sony PS3 are faster then the Pioneer at navigation and load times. A $2,200 BLU-RAY player should be a leader in speed, hopefully future Pioneer BLU-RAY players will improve in this area. At this price being able to play Super Audio CD's and DVD-Audio discs would have been ideal. Perhaps a future BLU-RAY audio format will one day be released, then Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio playback will be less of a issue.

A few Quotes from the Widescreen magazine review

"Up until now most 2.0 players have relied on external memory for the download content. The BDP-09FD includes a whopping 4GBs of internal memory!"

"I found the navigation to be a bit sluggish. From menu to menu there was a slight hesitation before moving to the next."

"Finally I measured the load time of a Blu-ray disc. I used the disc Enchanted for this measurement. I measured the time from the tray closing until you saw Johnny Depp in the scene from the Pirates preview. The BDP-09FD took 45 seconds, while the PS3 took 30 seconds."

"The BDP-09FD is a leap forward for Pioneer in video quality. Not only is it an excellent Blu-ray player, but it is their finest DVD player to date. Its build quality is unmatched by anyone. It offers profile 2.0 support and has the ability to upgrade in the field, as demonstrated by 2.42 update, which added DTS-HD Master Audio, BD-Live, and adjustable subwoofer-frequency support."

"If you have not moved to HDMI yet, the audio and video analog outputs on the player are probably the best on the market."
