Default Inside Man- Audio issue

Hey all,

Just watched my review copy of Inside Man and we have a major problem.

There's no surround right channel encoded on the DTS-MA english track.

I thought it might have been my setup but I tried it on two different players and switched to the other audio options. English is the only one that seems to be affected.

I wonder if we can get the Digital Bits on this.

Does anyone else have a review copy that can confirm?

CORRECTION:
It's not the whole movie! I just re-watched parts of it and tried to pinpoint when it goes out. It seems like it's in the middle of chapter 15, about 1 hour and 32 minutes into the movie. The channel is dead. I had my head right up to the speaker. Music is going in and out of every other channel, including the surround left. It's dead quiet and remains that way for the rest of the movie.

A good check is the music in the closing credits. It's blaring in all speakers but the surround right.

There is definitely content assigned to the right surround channel after 1:32, but you're right, it's nowhere near as aggressive as the left surround. It only consists of low level bass content which you may not even send to your left surround depending on what crossover setting you're using for your sub or whether you're running your surrounds full range.

But the bottom line: there is no treble or midrange content in the right surround after 1:32, whereas the other channels have aggressive content throughout the dynamic range.

While this certainly seems like an error in the mixing, it's not a foregone conclusion. We need to hear from the studio or audio engineers involved in the mix.

No doubt. I had my eye on this one but will have to wait for confirmation or a recall at this point.

This is disappointing to hear. How much of the movie would you say this goes on? You said after the 1:30 mark until the end, but how long is that? I'm sure all these BD's are ready to roll, so they will probably still be released. Maybe we will have some nice sales on this one to clear it off the shelves.

Inside Man is a little over 2 hours in running time so its sounds like this issue is for the last half hour of the movie.

But the fact that the reviewer didn't mention it seems odd. I wonder if its an issue for certain players?

Kudos to DigitalfreakNYC for identifying this problem. While I am changing the thread title because I don't think it is a "major" problem (it doesn't affect anything but the last half hour, after all the action sequences have ended), I did alter my audio rating from a perfect score and added an addendum to the audio section of the review:
Quote:
While the front three channels and left surround remain consistent throughout the dynamic range for the duration of the film, there is an interesting phenomenon just prior to one hour, 33 minutes into the film. For the remaining half hour of the movie, the right surround channel is not assigned any treble or midrange content. If you have no bass content sent to your right surround--e.g., because of subwoofer crossover selection or "small speaker" setting--you would think that channel went dead. This is a serious issue that weights the surround effects toward the left side. It is not clear if this is an intentional mixing decision or an error by the studio or engineers involved, but it is not a reason to avoid the title. The audio content is overall reference quality and it is an issue of mixing to the right surround for a relatively short period of the film, after most of the action sequences have already taken place. The front three channels and left surround are dynamic throughout.

Actually, I would argue there are some really good moments that utilize the rear surrounds from that point on. The entire release of the prisoners from the bank, the storming of the bank, and especially the music for the last 30 minutes. It's an incredibly directional sound mix and was (obviously) immediately apparent to me. With all due respect, I wouldn't consider an entire channel missing from a mix to be a "minor" problem. I really wish you hadn't changed the title of the thread.

Thank you.

"Well, the other 4 channels work perfectly. It's just that pesky 5th...so let's just knock it down a little bit."

Sheesh. People here (and elsewhere) have raised hell over MUCH less.

It's major enough for me not to buy it. Nuff said!

Where the heck is the quality control with some of these releases?

I'll review my HD DVD copy tonight. I wasn't planning getting the BD version until I saw it for $10 especially since the HD DVD with TrueHD can be had for $4. I hope they fix this major issue since eventually I would like to get it on BD.

HDD already confirmed that the HD DVD is fine.

This is a brand new encode with new sound options. Someone somewhere screwed up while this was going on.

This crushes my heart...This is the only HD-DVD exclusive title I wanted and they screwed it up. I hope the review copies are different from the retail ones. Highly doubtful though.
