Default Square Enix CEO: 360 & PS3 too complex

Square Enix's president and CEO, Yoichi Wada says the 360 & PS3 are over-engineered. What the heck is he talking about? It's the wii that is under-engineered.

They came out too early is what he's saying.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6172359...ewstop;title;4

Both depend too heavily on HDTVs for their graphics step up, when that technology has yet to reach the common saturation point. Costs to develop for both of these consoles are high, because of their higher specs and higher expectations of graphical quality.

Pretty much though, the article is about the Wii being the harbinger of the future of the gaming industry.

The thing is, you need a HDTV and 5.1 setup as a BASIC setup to enjoy these HD game systems. For the full experience, you need a 1080p HDTV + a HDMI audio receiver to decode the lossless audio for the PS3 titles. I can safely say that LESS then 1% of the US has that combo. So yah, they are too advanced for their time (especially the ps3), however people are NOT going to be jumping into the new technologies without SOMETHING to use on it, hence you gotta crawl before you can walk.

Now, consider if you didn't have broadband or an HDTV.

I can see the point, especially in reference to the American market [less so in the Japanese market, where you have 2mill+ people on fttp connections, but *shrug*]. These new consoles are pushing cutting edge features and support when very few people have the means for them.

Now, I understand the view, I don't necessarily agree with it . Time will tell if the Wii manages to broaden the market as a whole.

Ah thank you, and here's where the problem crops up. Especially when you look at the 360. How long did the XBox have for a shelf-life? Microsoft hasn't been secretive about their lifespan expectations of the current consoles. I'd be surprised if the next XBox doesn't come out within the next 3-4 years.

We should be happy for these "over-engineered" systems because videogames are helping push the need for HDTV's.

agreed.
Before the argument was "its not needed...so few people have an HDTV"

now we're seeing the new system and format pushing HD into the mainstream. good stuff.

Yeah, I read an article saying that videogames were a big factor in the push for HDTV's. I agree because games are the main reason I bought my Pio Elite. Lately I've been more into movies though. Waiting for the good games and I can't stop buying blu-ray movies

I dont blame square, anything they release on the PSP and DS sells like mad worldwide. They are just letting people know their intentions. If they canceled FF13/FFV13, then i'd be pissed at square, but they are on the way.

yeah, i'm not saying that their 'stuck in the past' stuff is bad, as i enjoy most of their stuff.

just disheartening to hear them complain about 'advanced' systems that have plenty of great games from other developers out there right now.

The only reason I bough my Sony Wega 50" HDTV is the PS3. I don't regret anything.

Big deal, I haven't liked a Square Enix game since the PSONe days [Parasite Eve, Xenogears, FF7] and pretty much everything Square released on the PS2 is crap.

If Square wants to limit itself to inferior platforms, they can go right ahead. I'm too busy watching Blu-Rays and playing games by developers who are willing to embrace the future.

This statement troubled me.

"...these consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years, they will fare better."

To me, that means he doesn't really understand that the PS2 &PS3 platforms were made to last 8+ years or they don't want to deal with the upfront costs of creating games of that magnitude. I'm going with the last option. The potential loss is greater if the game flops. That's added pressure to make sure the game will be a winner for them.

In the meantime, they could develop 2 to 3 Wii games in the time it takes to develop 1 really nice next-gen game. He should have just said he was scared and the Wii was his safest bet.

I do agree that those games you mentioned are fantastic, but how could you think that FFX was crap???

I also has bought a 40" LDC, HDMI reciever and HDMI DVD player and PS3 this year and I have 5.1 configuration. And I am realy enjoying it.

Due to PS3 blu-ray playback I bought 7 Blu ray movies already and will for sure buy a lot more...

They should be happy that they are pushing the edges...

It won't matter either way.

You can still use an old SD TV and it will work well with the PS3 (and the rival X360). Sure it is a BASIC experience to a minimal level......but at least it works. Am I right?

This needs to be rephrased:
Eg. To use the PS3, you at least NEED A TV (with at least composite output at the minimum).

Eg. To heighten the level of your PS3 experience, an HDTV set is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Some ignorant laymen need to know the difference between the two.

Well, that's sorta like saying you can play the PS3 on a black and white 14in mickey mouse tv.

Sure you can. But what's the point? You're paying a premium for the graphics.
