Default Square Enix Plans to Take Over Tecmo

Quote:
Square Enix Plans To Take Over Tecmo

Today at 1pm Japan Time, Square Enix will be outlining its plans for a friendly takeover troubled game maker Tecmo. Square Enix's takeover would help the company gain a stronger foothold in the U.S. market with popular Tecmo titles like the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive games. What's more, Tecmo's games will help strengthen Square Enix's current portfolio, which is heavily dependent on RPGs.

This isn't the first time Square Enix has moved in on a beleaguered company. In August 2005, Square Enix acquired Taito and wholly owned the company as a subsidiary by September 2005.

Could be good (now everything on PS3 too!) or bad (we REALLY love Xbox now!) Hard to say at the moment. But with the way Square has been leaning these days, I tend towards thinking this might just get them in even better with MS, which is bad. Hope I'm wrong and it's Tecmo fun for PS3 instead.

Heh, I'll pass. As long as I get my Tekken/Soul Calibur/Street Fighter on the PS3, I won't be hurting from not having the button-mash happy with bouncing udders game on the system. Hell, I'd be even willing to put up with an Asuka 120% Burning Fest sequel on the PS3 versus DOA

Got to say, apart from Soul Calibur on DC, Dead or Alive 2-4 has given a total fighting game novice like me the most enjoyment. I like the speedy button response, the lack of downtime during attack animations because they're mostly short, except of course throws.

So now we will not be able to tell if characters in the next DOA game are male or female! Oh well, DOA games pale in comparison to Tekken.

This can be good or bad. I find it surprising what it says about pushing Tecmo games in America; last I checked Ninja Gaiden and DoA did fine in America; it's Japan where they failed due to console preferences.

It could bode well for PS; let's remember that the only reason Square Enix paid any attention to Microshaft was massive bribery; and we have MaxPower backing that up.

If there's any truth to this, now would be a good time for Sony to follow my wisdom and buy another chunk of Square Enix.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. With Tecmo being pro Xbox for so long, how can they say they don't have a foothold in America? That had to be a typo.

I don't know if I just read the article incorrectly, but it sounded to me like it was saying that it would help Sqaure Enix in the US market because of the popular Tecmo titles that it would acquire such as Ninja Gaiden and DOA. I took it as though SE doesn't have the best foothold in the American market because of the primarily RPG library that they currently hold. Again, I might have just read it wrong.

Have to agree with you...I'm not an expert at fighting games, which is what has prevented me from buying SC4 (I'll be trying the demo tonight though). My first PS2 game was a Dead or Alive game and I've always been impressed since.

Think more Monster Rancher than Ninja Gaiden. And games like Tokobot.

They have pair of 'good' franchises in Ninja Gaiden and DOA, but outside of those two, their market strength in the US has really weakened significantly [again except for those two titles].

Not sure I want to see Square Enix buy Tecmo. I dont want Tecmo to become RPG developers. I want Ninja Gaiden game's in the future.
