Default Trailers That Show Too Much

I just watched a trailer for Love Happens (I watch all trailers )
and it seems like a lot of movies just show tons of stuff that happens in the movie, as in the whole story arc. Another couple examples are Funny People and Harry Potter: HBP.

Anybody else feel like recently movie trailers are showing a bit too much of the film? Is this because people want to know exactly what to expect from films?

I think trailers need to be kept to 30 seconds of footage and that's it. They do have to show some essential stuff though or a lot of people won't want to go.

Redbelt is one of the worst examples of that.

I think the Island is the best example of an add showing to much, thankfully I had only seen a couple tv spots that didn't give away the film before I saw it.

I agree that some essential stuff needs to be shown but with Funny People, it shows that he is going to die, then it shows he gets better. Unless that happens very early on, I'd rather see it not knowing he gets better beforehand.

With Harry Potter, I read the book and in the trailer I saw at least two shots of big things near the end?!?!

Redbelt does show a lot so I avoid those as often as possible.

The Happening and Quarantine come to mind which show the ending in the trailer.

Terminator Salvation revealing that Marcus Wright
[Show spoiler] was a machine

Tagged it just in case.

That would have been a good twist (with one alteration to the beginning of the film) to keep secret as long as possible.

Same with Watchmen. Trailers should not give away the entire story arc (beginning, middle, end) nor should they show more than MAYBE a quick shot of part of the climax like Iron Man.

I also think that Taken is a fantastic trailer because it shows the beginning premise and ome shots of what the movie will be like. Also, that conversation on the phone, while awesome in the preview, is even better in the film.

EDIT:

THAT WAS A HUGE GIVE-AWAY! I coldn't believe they did that! Granted, many may have figured it out quickly but I didn't want to go into theaters knowing that.

Exactly, and as cliche as it is to refer to this movie now, it just flat out nailed the trailer and what a trailer is supposed to do imo.

It piqued the public's interest
It showed you some of the more impressive shots in the film for just a second or two
Gave you a quick glimpse to each main character
Had a little humor to close it off

But did it tell you the plot? No not really.
All you know is that it is Batman vs the Joker and the Joker blows some stuff up.

The international trailer by sony did a MUCH better job with the secrets/reveals

Like the international trailer actually shows Arnold, where as the US one didn't even mention it.

But besides that, well actually even with that, the trailer is still my favorite trailer ever

I've been noticing this too. For example, movies like I am Legend and District 9, I think the previews would have been way cooler if they wouldn't have shown the zombies/aliens and just teased us. It's good to be teased at times.

There may be more but the one trailer I watched for "The Fall" pretty much told the whole movie in about 3 mins.

I just saw the trailer for Brothers last night. It pretty much gave away the entire movie. Has Natalie Portman, Toby Mcguire, Jake G.

Most comedies, even The Hangover showing the Mike Tyson bit.

The Dark Knight was perfect I think in this category, especially how it used alternate takes in the movie and the trailers, that part made me very happy while watching it.

Terminator Salvation and Watchmen gave away alot too, that Marcus thing would have been cooler had we not known anything.

The Orphan didn't give away the twist either.

It's old, but Terminator 2 trailer was a champion... Trailers did show Ahnuld being a good cyborg, Patrick being another cyborg... which was a major spoiler. I got lucky and saw the movie w/o trailers.

One of the worst parts about trailers showing too much (besides being able to piece everything together) is say a movie does one of those tricks where we are supposed to believe a character is dead yet we have seen in a trailer, that character doing something we have not seen yet.

The Dark Knight was a good trailer though, teasing what we will see but almost none of the best parts are in the trailer. I can't tell you how many reviews of movies I get where the people say "The best/funniest part were from the trailer."

Moon is another one that has a revealing shot in the trailer to where I knew what was going to happen towards the end.

The Fan trailer was pretty good at showing practically nothing but pulling me in.

Terminator Salvation definitely. It would have been cool to find out the during movie. Possibly scrap the beginning of the movie too.
