Default Star Trek HD

High Def Digest has an article about Star Trek coming to HD DVD and it doesn't mention Blu-ray yet (which sucks cuz, yeah, I admit it: I'm a Trekkie). ST is Paramount so what gives?

There was a Q&A at CES 2007 in JAN, they mentionned that ST was going to be HD DVD exclusive in 2007...

The only reason this excites me is because it is now an inevitably before we see TNG and the movies(including 1-6) in HD. I don't much care for the original series.

I think it has been mentioned elsewhere, but my understanding is that Paramount is to release Star Trek TOS in HD-DVD first, then Blu-Ray (2008?). I'll wait till then, but it will be good to get all things Trek in Blu!

Anyone know why is being released on HD-DVD first? Is it because of the IME thing?

But exclusive in 2007 right, and we are about halfway through 07 now? So there is still a possibility of 08 then?

Somewhere buried in the forums is another thread that talked about this.

i was seriously hoping that the incredible gap between the first announcement and today's was a sign that they were re-evaluating their decision to go hd-dvd first.

come on people 70%/30%

This makes me sad, because i'm still waiting for the matrix which also fell into that black hole of "well it will come to blu eventually". I don't care if they're a month or two apart, but that quickly turns into To be announced.

I'm with Algernon. Star trek is a deal breaker for me, and the second it comes out, i will be eyeing that 360 HD-DVD drive, even though i've already got 2 blu players and quite a collection that i'm supporting.

I understand your feelings about jumping onto both formats, but I for one am going to wait... waiting sucks, but it's part of life... lines for example... but I refuse to buy something on HD DVD because I chose to support BD and BD only. Buying both will only prolong this format war. Once it's over, we'll see more things come to the Blu-ray format, I think.

I have patience. I can wait for HDDVD to die before getting stuff like Star Trek and the Matrix & all those Universal movies and NBC shows I love on BD.

The expense of doing TNG in HD would be extreme. With TOS they have 35mm film prints and negatives of each episode. With TNG they would have to go back, locate and rescan every single piece of film, re-edit the episode to match, frame for frame, and then they'd have to redo all the ship shots except the ILM stuff done for the first ep, since most of it was shot on video, and pretty nasty video at that.

I seriously don't think, based on the SpikeTV ratings that the money is there for that kind of revamp, we're probably talking $200 million.

With Babylon 5, SciFi co-financed it for a show that hadn't had much repeat play, while TNG has been played to death for 20 years. If they could do it at the $300,000 or so they're doing TOS for, it may be much more feasible.

This is some seriously old news in desperate need of some official updates.

Given the way things are going, I'll be surprised beyond words if they give HD-DVD any kind of exclusivity on something big like Star Trek.

I'm not sure but I thought I read somewhere that Star Trek The Original Series remastered was going to be DVD/HD-DVD combo Disc. If this is true, I'm guessing that's why HD-DVD will be coming out first. We're going to see Blu-ray in early 2008. (going by the old news)

I agree with TheOmegaSoldier, with no updates since early Jan/Feb 2007, they might be rethinking the release dates. We also haven't heard any updates about Stargate Atlantis Season 1 and that was going to be one of the first shows on Blu-ry.

Just in case you overlooked it, the first link from jedisinclair was a news article dated today about it. I skipped over it at first but it looks like a year went by and they still have no sense.

That is what I heard too.

It will be interesting to see if that pans out.

As it stands I am not sure if they have even aired the eps in HD on TV yet.
