Default Star Trek or Star Wars.

With the recent success of the last Star Trek film and the influx of Sci-Fi films that have either come out this year or being released later this year I was wondering what the census is on the 2 biggest sci-fi franchises of all time.

Star Trek or Star Wars?

I personally like Star Trek better because I think it started it all. Star Trek has had more movies and TV shows and spin off's than any other show in history.

What do you all think?

Star Wars.

I think Trek has a smaller base, but a more cult-ish, close knit base than the larger Star Wars base.

See, I would have thought the opposite. I thought there were more Star Trek fans than Star Wars, but so far I am the only one who said Star Trek. O'well I guess I won't mention my favorite commercial is Priceline.

I love Star Trek, but that love is pretty much exclusive to the original crew.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan. Love the entire saga.

Cool Loyalty Questioned!

The new Star Trek made me "question" my loyalty...just as the '07 Red Sox World Series Win made my wife "question" her loyalty to NY. She is a Spock Fan...I am life-long SW.

The new Trek film will make you "question" if you will turn to the Darker Side IMHO

Star Trek has more movies, TV shows and spin offs, but I was never interested in either of them. The last Star Trek movie was an exception.

NEVER. I enjoyed the latest Star Trek movie, it was fun and all, but the Star Wars original trilogy was pure magic.

Star Trek definately. It may be a sci-fi show but has dealt with many serious issues (both contemporary and future) over the years in it's sci-fi context. Star Wars has not done this to anywhere near the same exent.

Star Wars had a bigger impact on me personaly though I like both.

Having said that I think in terms of overall influence on both people and pop culture Star Trek takes the cake no contest. This is hard for me to say as a die hard SW fan but Star Trek's influence on the world is undeniable. It is beyond catch phrases and memorable characters.

Star Trek.

Star Wars is big, there's no denying it. It has 6 movies, an animated series, a slew of books & videogames... but the cultural, societal, and scope of Star Trek is imo larger.

ST has no less than 11 movies, 5 TV series (spanning over nearly 30 seasons x 22 episodes minimum - and not counting the horrible animated series), a slew of books and videogames, etc.

ST has portrayed the first interracial kiss on television, and -alongside 2001, has inspired countless people to become involved with Space (ask many NASA engineers). Many renowned scientists or Sci Fi writters have been so inspired or engrossed in ST that they have wanted to participate in its creation (Ellison, Bradbury, Asimov among others) or be in it (like Stephen Hawking).

Star Wars is probably more "hip" (might change with the new Timeline and J J Abrahams), but ST is imo bigger.
