Default Question: The $3000 Difference...

I did a quick scan of the forum, but I wasn't really sure how to search for this topic, so I figure I'd ask - feel free to reference an existing thread.

Reading about a $3500 blu-ray player, I'd really appreciate it if someone could fill me in on what makes a player THAT much more expensive - it's impossible for me to imagine I could see that much of a jump in quality from my PS3.

Does it do a lot more than the average blu-ray player? Is it branding hype? I have to assume there's some significant differences, but $3000 worth?
