Default DVR Alert - Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom HD Today

My new favorite movie channels is Epix 1 & 2. Its a joint venture between Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate. At 6 pm Epix 1 will show Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom. The first 3 Indys will be on during the week. I caught a little bit of Temple of Doom this past week and it is flawless. Raiders will be on later this week. They are showing movies I am not seeing on the other premium channels like Iron Man and Cloverfield. The original Roller Ball is on this morning.

They are innovators. They want you to be able to access their movies multiple ways including on demand on their website. http://www.epixhd.com/

THANKS for the alert on this; I like this channel too! Are you aware that they broadcast in 720p? This according to Wikipedia "Programming content on the Epix television channel, high definition subscription video-on-demand and online services are broadcast in 720p, in comparison to the other premium channels who offer their HD content in 1080i."

Still, I'm very happy that I can see and dvr some of the movies I haven't purchased on Blu such as The Duchess, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, etc.

720p shows action better then 1080i, its why some of the channels (ESPN) tout it as the best format and they do it because it causes less artifacts in ball games. Since its an action orientated channel, it makes sense and the there will be less stutter or step during action sequences then if they used 1080i. If you watch on Dish, your receiver will up it to 1080i anyway. If you have ever seen a baseball game in OTA 720p vs the compressed 1080i signal that Dish and others used, you will want an OTA antenna set up.

I watched a movie on EPIX HD this weekend and it looked like an upconvert, not actual HD. The quality didn't look as good as some of the other HD channels.

I watched Varsity Blues on BD this past week and it looked like an upconvert. Anyway, you have to compare apples to apples for the same movie since they have different transfers. It may have been an old transfer from the early days. What I saw briefly, Temple of Doom, last week was stunning. Obviously not just a scan but a remaster. Some of these movies are old. I have not seen any of the new movies they are running like Defiant, Cloverfield or Ironman.

I hope you don't think I was bashing this channel for broadcasting in 720p because that wasn't the case. I also remember how great these and other HD Satellite broadcast used to look via C Band when I was using my 4DTV receiver with/HD and my 10-foot dish. Unfortunately, C Band became not only too expensive but many channels began to disappear. Personally, I'm glad you posted this like I said!

Oh ok. I think people forget there was a format war and it isn't that 720p is HD lite.

I don't know about that Indy showing tonight. It may have been the Lowery/THX digital scans used for the DVD and upconverted. Its a little tougher to tell because the source is compressed 720 converted to 1080i by the receiver and I think my TV converts that to 1080p. Lots of converting going on. And I am tired today, my eyes are bothering me. The scenes I saw last week were at the end of the movie. I watched a little of the beginning. It may have been the original source is a little soft. I did notice focusing errors where the main subject was soft focused. By the time the got to the play with no pilots, it was looking pretty good.

The channel is great. It shows lots of action stuff like Iron Man, Defiant, Cloverfield, etc.. I like it better then HDNET Movies!

The only issue is the looming Dish TiVo lawsuit. Dish may lose and has already said instead of playing TiVo they will turn off the DVRs! I am keeping fingers and toes crossed. I have hundreds of HD movies on 4 external USB HDs. Real gems like Jaws, Lawrence of Arabia, Apocalypse Now Redux, Platoon, and Tora Tora Tora, not out on BD and no release in sight. Sigh.

C Band. WOW! I had Voom and Direct because Voom didn't have a DVR. So I got all those cool channels, the first scanned movies you saw. For OTA I had one of the Channel Master bat looking antennas that came with the Voom install. Seems like forever ago, but it wasn't. They really started the drive to offer HD programming. Look how far its gone in what, 6 years!?
