I kind of love Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. While on the surface it looks like a forgettable family film that’s a quick cash-in on a children’s book, it’s actually a witty and at times darkly comic film that has no problem being absolutely bizarre. And despite the anti-family film humor, the movie managed to rack up $243 million worldwide and Sony has been mulling over a sequel the past couple of years. Now it looks like Cloudy 2 is gaining some traction as 24 Frames reports that the studio has hired Horrible Bosses screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to write the script. I caught Horrible Bosses last night and while I’m not sure how much was ad-libbing and how much was Daley and Goldstein, it was the funniest R-rated comedy I’ve seen so far this summer. Hiring Daley and Goldstein is a good sign that Sony isn’t going to ditch the weirdness that made the original so enjoyable.

Unfortunately, Lord and Miller won’t be returning, but “the producers are set to hire a director who had worked in a lower-profile capacity developing the story for the original.” The film won’t be based on Ron and Judi Barrett’s follow-up kids’ book Pickles to Pittsburgh, but will use an original idea. I eagerly await the future adventures of Flint Lockwood and food-based catastrophe.

The first movie was one of my favorite movies of '09. Great send up to the disaster movies with an amazing voice cast. Definitely check it out. I can't wait for the second.

Saw the first one on DVD but looking forward to seeing it in HD; I've got the Blu-ray on the way from my local library. I like to check films out before I buy, if possible!

Luckily, my library network has a small buy growing Blu-ray collection, believe it or not.

While I wouldn't consider the first movie on par with the Pixar movies like some reviewers did I still found it enjoyable. I probably won't see it in theaters but I'll very likely get it on release date. Good news.

Same here; I never guessed that there'd be a sequel.

It's certainly possible to have all the characters return for another wacky adventure; it'll be interesting to see what they come up with. I still don't think a sequel is necessary though.

Dude you're kidding. Man I cannot believe that I didn't know that. I used to drive my parents insane making them read it to me over and over. I didn't think that I'd like the movie because I loved the book so much, but it wasn't bad.

Is the CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Sequel Called CLOUDY 2: REVENGE OF THE LEFTOVERS? Plus a First Look at Promo Poster

I love the animated adaptation of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. It is delightfully strange, witty, and at times, downright darkly comic (it still blows my mind that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller got away with the scene where Flynn charges into a house, and basically uses snowballs to murder a family). I was a little bummed that the duo wouldn’t be returning for the sequel, but I’m encouraged that Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are handling the script, and new directors Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn worked on the first movie. We still don’t know what the sequel will be about, but we might know what it’s called. We were sent a promo poster for the movie and the title reads: Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers. As you may recall, the leftovers created a crazy avalanche that forced out the poor citizens of Swallow Falls, so haven’t the leftovers already had their revenge?

Again, this could just be a working title, and to be honest, I don’t really care what the movie is called. I’m just hoping the flick is as funny and memorable as Cloud with a Chance of Meatballs. Hit the jump to check out the promo poster.
