Hey guys, New to the forum a I have been interested in finding out info about this technology. Will all the new Blu Ray players require a TV with HDMI? is that a requirement for the technology? what about people with older HDTV's? or LCD TV's are they out of luck as far as Blu Ray goes or will there be other connectors? I was just wondering if a person who was interested in getting into this technology had to consider getting a new TV with their new Blu Ray player? Thanks for the info guys.

OK, the way it works is they'll have two connectors:
Component HDMI with HDCP So if you want hdmi you need a TV with HDCP or you're screwed. Older TVs don't have this. But BD looks great through Component. |

However, if you are getting new equipment, my advice is to get items that will support HDMI (preferably 1.3), HDCP and ICT. |

of course, since the 1.3 spec just came out... finding a t.v. with it will be near impossible |

I see so aslong as your TV has component input your good? well that's goo to know. I thought it was HDMI and it was all linked to copy protection etc..guess I am wrong or it's not implemented yet..thx for the info guys.

Component you're fine. The Blu Ray fellas have pretty much given everybody until 2010 to get a TV with HDMI/HDCP. Or indeed DVI-D/HDCP.
Then what they'll do is set the evil ict bit on new disks. The disks you buy before then will be fine. ICT bit will degrate the signal over component to just above DVD quality. |

The decision hasn't yet been made whether ICT will even be implemented after 2010 has it?

Nobody knows if and when ICT will be implemented. As far as a pure digital signal goes yes the new players are HDMI-HDCP only.

HDCP is part of the HDMI specification - if you have HDMI, it is, by default, with HDCP. Only if you have DVI is it questionable whether there is HDCP on the DVI connection. Most do, some do not.
Bottom line: Blu-ray and HD-DVD players will have HDMI, component, S-video, and composite video connections. Only HDMI and component are even capable of carrying HD signals such as 720p and 1080i. While 1080p is possible over component cables, Blu-ray does not allow for 1080p to be sent over component, so you must use the HDMI connection if you want 1080p sent to your display. A 20 year old TV can display Blu-ray disc, but to fully appreciate the quality of the content you want a newer display with a digtal connection and properly calibrated HD quality. |

HDCP over DVI-D exists, yup. You can (or will soon) get PC Video cards with HDCP built in. Worth knowing as you can save a bunch of cash by using a PC Monitor instead of an expensive TV.

PC Monitors must have HDCP on the monitor itself, not just on the video card connected to it. Having HDCP on the output of the video card means that the data on the cable is encrypted and then must be sent to a monitor with HDCP on the input.
It is not about HDCP being on the sending side, but on the receive side. So, if you have a display with a DVI input (either DVI-D or DVI-I) look for some write up that indicates that the input includes HDCP. This usually is in the specifications of the product INPUT: DVI-I (HDCP) or something like that. Some aren't written, but do include it. Very few computer monitors are HDCP compliant, and this helps to bring costs down on computer monitors. |

Yup, agreed, very rare atm. But if you want a screen for your den, and you can live with one under 26 inches, and you have a sound system already and you find a monitor with HDCP over DVI-D, save yourself a fortune. *wink* *wink*

Some DVI equiped HDTVs that don't have HDMI may suport HDCP. I have an HDTV that have a HDCP compliant DVI port. I just bought a DVI to HDMI adapter that was on clearance for $15. All I need is a Blu-ray player. PS3 seems to be the best bet for me.
However it's not my first priority. Because i plan on geting the Wii. ![]() Maybe my tax returns in 2007 will cover the price of a PS3, if I can find any. |
