Default Your Favorite Special Feautures?

What are your favorite special features?

Specific like from a specific movie release or just by category/type.

I like well done commentaries, deleted scenes, bloopers, and making offs. There are other things but it varies by release.

I always like more extras for animated films and films from the 80's (and older).

Feature length documentaries for me. Like Laurent Bouzereau produces back in the day and stuff like Peter Jackson produces for his films. Those features are just the best. They really give you a sense of what it is to make a movie. I've watched The Hobbit special features more than the films! And there's like 30 hours of documentaries for those movies!

The 220-minute Prometheus making-of The Furious Gods is a thorough, exhausting masterpiece.

All of the documentaries on the Alien Quadrilogy and later the Anthology are some of the best! I remember that DVD set coming out and what a huge deal it was. It's such an exhaustive set, I can't imagine there ever being one to top it, honestly.

I also remember one of the first dual disc Special Edition DVD's, The Abyss! With fully animated menus. It was an incredible release. It's such a shame there's not a Blu-ray release.

1000% agree with all this, any documentary with Laurent Bouzereau's name guarantees great quality.

My favorites by far are commentary tracks, and specifically the ones focused on the writing and creative decisions. I like the Maximum Movie Mode type approaches too, such as Zack Synder's on Watchmen and Man of Steel.

For me, its great to go back and watch the feature film itself again with the track on for a different experience.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) - Promotional short where they never mention it's a Christmas movie being released in July and instead are trying to figure out how in the world to market it:

Aside from that film, nothing beats a commentary track with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell sitting down with a case a beer to talk about a movie.

I enjoy any restoration piece, especially the more detailed ones, but they are never detailed enough, or long enough, for me.

I love it when some of the director's short films are included.

They're relatively short, but I'm a big fan of the "Horror's Hallowed Grounds" pieces on a lot of the Scream Factory CE's.

Commentaries and feature-length making-of docs are king.

I've never been much for deleted scenes, and even trailers/TV spots aren't really important to me since I rarely watch marketing material these days and it's all on YouTube anyway.

My wife loves gag reels. I really enjoy deleted scenes. I used to enjoy commentaries but rarely find the time to watch a movie with commentary on anymore.

I went through the special features on Spider-man:Homecoming last night and really liked some of them, Peter Parker's mini movie, the school broadcasts and the Captain America PSA's.

In-depth documentaries

Animated short films (where applicable)

When classic movies have a short subject and old cartoon

Enlightening but entertaining commentaries

On the Unforgiven blu ray, there's a great episode of the western TV series "Maverick" co-starring a young Eastwood. One of the few special features I've rewatched.

My Favourite Special Features:

Alternate versions (TV cuts, etc.)

Documentaries (feature-length and loaded with rare footage.)

Deleted Scenes/Outtakes.

Film restoration pieces.

Extensive Photo Galleries.

I love the feature length making of docs.

My personal favorites are probably Empire of Dreams on the Star Wars OT DVD set and 1998’s Behind the Planet of the Apes, available on the 68 film’s Blu-ray.

I like alternate cuts of the films, deleted/extended/alternate scenes & new interviews with mains stars & director. Trailers & TV spots are also nice.

I like the VFX breakdowns (before/after reels) that visual effects production companies often post to Vimeo.

They're direct and to the point. And since the companies are promoting themselves, they reliably make these reels - even when the BluRays have no special features.
