Anyone Know When The PS3 Is Dropping down to 65nm RSX?

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone in the know, or if anyone has heard of any recent announcements, as to when the GPU's in the PS3 will be changing to the smaller 65nm versions.

I know the current 40GB PS3 models had the reduction in the CPU to 65nm but it remained with the 90nm RSX.

I had also heard of an announcment last November that Toshiba (of all people ) were in the final stages of developing the 65nm RSX for roll out by Sony inside PS3's in January 2008.

There was also talk of a 160GB PS3 in Japan with the 65nm RSX scheduled for release in December but it never materialized.

However no mention that I can see has been made since then.

Also does anybody think the reduction will be done before Warners changes to sole Blu-Ray support in May?

As I will be wanting to definitely make my purchase of a PS3 by then. I just want to have the cooler/quieter running 65nm GPU inside, especially if we are talking literally weeks away from the release.

What is it with people and 65nm chips? I know they may reduce the consumption of power. But really, does it really matter that much to everybody here?

The PS3 is incredibly quiet as far I am concerned.

Well, it seemed to be a big issue for the 360 because of heat generation concerns w/ respect to the 90nm chips, but the PS3 does not have those issues.

Well for me 65nm =

1. cooler runner.
2. Quieter runner, thus meaning lesser chance of the PS3 fans needing to speed up during blu-ray playback.
3. Cheaper to make, thus meaning another possible price reduction in the PS3 which is how the 40GB version became cheaper due to the 65nm CPU.
4. Lesser chance of it developing a fault later down the line due to the better performing chips inside. (I am mainly basing this on my knowlege of PC CPU size reductions however).

I just basically on AV forums hear people mention that often during a movie the PS3 fans kick in and it becomes distracting. With the 65nm RSX there is a seriously reduced chance of this ever occuring.

I personally will be buying a PS3 as soon as that reduction occurs. I just am hoping anyone knows if its going to be sooner rather than later.

My six-month old PS3 sounds alright with me. No complaints.

for the 40 gig they also removed alot of componits and made it more effincent

and just some advice plz go some were with a ps3 in open area and try and hear it
im not going to lie sitting 6 feet from my 80 gig(louder one) whens there no audio on i can here a slight humm but for me its just speakers in my tv a on low

Forget 65nm, when are they coming out with the 45nm version?

I bought the 40GB PS3 on Sunday and it does not seem intrusive at all. My TV's fans are very loud though.

But they also got rid of the backwards compatibility for PS2 games. That alone rules out my decision of buying the 40 gig HDD PS3.

They did? Not that I care as I don't own any, but my 40GB has functionality for doing saves on PS2 games, or so the menu says it does at least.

the 40 gig only has 2 usb ports instead of 4. They also don't have the SD/memory stick/compact flash ports.

The only advantage the 40 gig has over the 80 gig is that it's quieter. Honestly though, my 80 is pretty quiet as it is and i have no complaints. I also like having the memory stick port, as I don't have to plug in my psp to the ps3 to transfer my files.
