The reviews for both are all over the place. Seems to be a real 'in the eye of the beholder' thing. I have been hoping to get a second hand copy cheap from somewhere, as I'm not confident enough on the quality to pay full price, but so far can't find one for less than £10. I don't care about the extras, my Anchor Bay UK DVD (appaling NTSC to PAL conversion of the movie), has them all on anyway. And the photoshop cover on that'snot much better than the new BD art either :/

How does the studio canal DVD (optimum release) stack up against the anchor bay dvd release. Both are 2 disc special editions. Anyone know? Does either version have something extra over the other?

Extras-wise, The AB has an additional stills gallery, some storyboards, talent bios & a couple of trailers, plus the screenplay & screensavers on DVD-ROM. Mine came with a nice 16-page booklet. IMHO it has better artwork too. Early editions came in a shiny digipak. & not that it makes any difference to viewing the movie, but The AB version is also divided into 25 chapters (the Optimum version only had about 8 chapters IIRC) Hope that helps! ![]() |

That old Anchor Bay set is still the best version of Near Dark out there, incredibly. I do not recommend last month's French release to anyone unless you like max DNR. Don't know why I thought that release would be good - maybe all those Studiocanal Carpenter remasters clouded my judgment. Why they would bother with a crap release on the cusp of a seemingly new era for the studio is anyone's guess.
