Is the video game or first movie truly scary, or mostly just entertaining in the horror genre? Haven't played the games yet.
The trailer leads me to believe it's "mostly entertaining" than actually scary, but I'd have to see the film to know for sure. |

The games themselves aren't truly scary or horrifying, (well maybe FNAF 4), the gameplay relies more on the stressful (and panic if its your first time playing) experience of playing them. Each game has a different game mechanic and the scare factor comes primarly from the anticipation of getting jumpscared by an animatronic. The game's lore itself tho is way, way, WAY more interesting and is the main thing fans get crazy about. It's disturbing at times yet silly in a supernatural/ sci-fi kinda way. The movie is watchable in my opinion but it's not scary. Average at best and honestly it didn't the games justice enough. It's entertaining, the animatronics look faithful, has some nice kills, and is simple enough for people who are unfamiliar with the games. Also it has its own cannon/storyline separate from the games.

So the stories were the creepiest aspect, and then the movie wasn't scary in comparison, not doing the game or stories justice. That's disappointing, although expected with Hollywood tampering with the essence of things so often. |

The first game is legitimately horrifying and can be nightmare inducing, it made choices none of the other games had and before the lore ruined everything, part of the scare factor was the mystery of what these things were and why they were trying to kill you The second game comes close but is weaker in the scare factor compared to the first, 3 is mediocre and it's when the games began to try too hard, the fourth game is absolutely awful, by then it was just about the jumpscares and looking over the top in terms of design Everything after 3 just tried way too hard and just cared about jumpscares rather than the psychological factor that made the first game work so well |

That brings up a good point about how revealing too much about a horror villain can ruin a sense of mystery and dread. I was really liking the horror aspect of an older movie, Stir of Echoes, and then it revealed who the ghost was and it was no longer scary IMO, turning it into an investigative movie instead. Sometimes less is more for a horror villain's origin. That movie would've been great for horror if it didn't reveal the ghost's story. |
