I recently moved my DVD/Blu-ray collection to basement (it was huge), along with cabinet of course. After a week or so, I put in a Blu-ray movie and it didn't work. I tried another, didn't work. I checked the back of those discs, they have waves on them (like they're wet or something). NOTHING WORKED! What the hell happened? No one touches my collection. The basement stays very cold, could that be the reason? If so, what a terrible disc. I have lost so much money. WTF.
My DVDs are still fine. These discs were not near any source of heat or radiator. I really hope there's a solution for this, I have 30+ discs. I'd hate to lose so much money. Registered here to ask this question.. can someone help me out?! |

The data is packed in a far greater density on a BR disc than DVD.
So you can see how temp can easily effect it. Even with the hard coating a little bit of finger print grease could make a disc unreadable until you clean it off. Just an example of how sensitive the laser is. I hope its just a temp issue. |

All my discs (Blu and DVD) have survived a few days at < 12C. We were snowed in and without power (and therefore heat) in early December. No physical damage to the discs (not that I expected any).
Unless your basement is actually a vat of liquid nitrogen I wouldn't expect any damage either. Let's see some pictures of the discs. Without pics, this has a certain aroma to it... |

Post some pictures of what you're seeing.
Could be something like mold, or could just be your player went bad. If, as you say, you're seeing some sort of pattern on the discs (all of them? truly?) then it should show up in a photograph. I don't think it's the cold though. I've not seen any unusual complaints about Netflix or BBO, and we've got tons of people here who've now had their discs for 2 winter seasons in areas that are much colder than your environment. |

Damn, it seems like it could be my player but it does play DVDs/CDs with no problems.
It's a Philips Blu-ray Drive (BDD-1001) on my PC, which I connect to TV as well. The discs were working FINE before I moved the stuff. My bro has a PS3. I will borrow it from him tonight to check further. By the way, I can say for sure there were NO wavy patterns on the discs before. It looks like a rainbow, ya know. Sorry, can't provide pictures... =/ |

This really smells like BS to me, but if we can see some pics of the discs that might help the credibility issue.... otherwise I'll consider this an isolated incident at best.

Definitely try the PS3 before you freak out completely. And about the only way we can get a good hard diagnosis of the disc is with a picture.
Let us know the outcome... very interested personally since I recently started thinking about the long-term storage needs of Blu-Ray since I'm looking to use it for data archiving myself. -John K. |
