Default BR drive or PS3 ?

Ok, i have about 6 hours to make my mind up and order.

I really can't decide what to buy, so help me decide please.

I will be buying this pc tonight:

Intel Q6600 2.40GHz Overclocked to 3.00GHz
Asus P5N-T Deluxe nForce 780i (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2
Asus GeForce EN8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

I either buy the standard:
Samsung 20x DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter

or

LG Blu-Ray ReWriter/HD-DVD ROM/DVD Lightscribe ReWriter for £140
more.

Now, i have little interest in recording in the BR format, and i'm only interested in playing selective 1080p BR movies/docs.

I kinda think the BR drive will be somewhat outdated in the near future as regards to speeds & limited as for upgrading to any new BR enhancements.

My other option is to just buy the Samsung 20x DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter, like i said, thus saving £140 & buying a PS3 which i can get for £280 . I will not be buying any PS3 games!

I'm guessing the PS3 is far more "future proof" than any pc drive is ever going to be.

So what do i go with ?

The PS3 will have far greater compatibility with new movies as they come out, and a regular DVD writer will record much, much faster. I have a standalone player and a home theater PC with the Blu-Ray drive, and I prefer using my standalone - much less hassle, far greater compatibility, and better audio options.

For watching blu-ray movies, a stand-alone blu-ray player or the PS3 is most preferred because when you watch any movie on the PC the movie will skip a little

Definitely go with the PS3. It offers out-of-the-box simplicity with futureproofing due to easy and frequent firmware upgrades.

Plus, it will never stutter during playback like most PCs will.

you can stream all your music/photos/videos from the new PC to the PS3. Even Sirius and XM satelite radio.

PC is more upgradeable than a ps3 and thus more futureproof. All a PS3 is, is a standardized PC so Game Devs can make games without the need to worry about optimization. This also means it's less futureproof. Movie wise though they are the same.

With the system you're getting you'll be happy, but buy the full version of Powerdvd ultra, don't use the oem.

Also you could get a drive that just reads blu-ray for less than the rewriter.

And your PC is already better than the PS3 hardware. The Drive is just a drive, it's the software that makes it futureproof. PS3 is better than a standalone because it's built for gaming. Gaming PC's were better than the PS3 before the PS3 even came out. It's all about optimization.

With your rig - DRIVE ALL THE WAY . It will be future proof - no need for the gaming. Tech is always changing - my PC has kept pace with everything and its my main testing vehicle for new technology! Your rig is in the elite class! Give it a BD and be happy!

Not that PC! I've just built two for customers like that (same specs motherboard, everything) and virtually cried when they left the house -the speed was unbelievable!

let me know what your 3d benchmark is on that machine. My manager has the Q6600 overclocked to 4ghz water cooled with two ATI 3850 graphics cards and his score was close to 18,000

I decided to go with the brand new processor, the E8450 and overclocked my cpu to 4.05ghz on air (runs extremely cold because of the 45nm) and one 8800GT Nvidia factory superclocked and I scored 14,000 on first try. Of course he is threatening to steal my machine since I paid a fraction of what he spent on his yet my pc is right there by his, hahaha. I'm going to let him play with mine one day, he said he could easily get my score well over 17,000, just need to play around with it.

edit: btw, my machine plays Crysis maxed out on everything and plays very smooth with no glitching yet his machine with two cards he has to turn the graphics down,

This is the key to your decision. If the BD burner is not something that you'd use in the next 6 months, why bother buying it? The reason is that within that 6 months, and with the acceleration of BD as THE next generation optical media, the price on such burners will drop dramatically as more CEs manufacture burners.

If playing movies is all that you want to do with the BD burner, then just get a PS3. If you already have a PS3, then save the money and use it later in the year for a cheaper drive; you can always slot in the new drive in your future old PC.

PS3 not only is cheaper but also is the best Blu-ray player out there atm. It helps that the DVD upconversion is the BEST out there.
