Why would you want to use optical if you can utilize HDMI

HDMI for video and optical for audio? Yes. But like cartman781 said: why?

Heck, that's what I do - optical instead of HDMI. The line of reasoning is long, but until I get an Onkyo, it'll stay that way.

But, like as these fellas have said, yes you can.

maybe he has a old receiver like me and the best he can do for the receiver is optical.
I have hdmi to my tv and optical running from my ps3 to my receiver.
One day I will have a receiver that can handle hdmi.

Because some HDTV's (like my Westinghouse LVM-37w1 ) have DVI 1080p inputs. HDMI does not transfer audio via DVI, so I must resort to Optical for audio.

Possible reason why: New TV, old receiver. Until my recent overhauling, I had a TV with HDMI, but my receiver only had red/white pin connectors. I ended up just feeding the TV to the receiver. Chances are: OP has a surround receiver with optical inputs and a hi-def TV with HDMI.

Yup -- the reason seems pretty straightforward to me. Older receiver that can't do HDMI.

Same as me.

Read what the OP said. Read it!

Even if a HDTV doesn't have HDMI inputs, by using a receiver with HDMI inputs (and most receivers with this feature will also accept multichannel input via PCM), you can use a HDMI-to-DVI cable to connect to your receiver.

D'OH!

I'm so doped up on drugs right now -- do I get a pass?

Are there receivers that won't do audio via HDMI (like the Onkyo 505?)

There's nothing wrong with optical if you want Dolby Digital 5.1.

Yes, I think it can. But you have to go to the settings and change the output for both video and audio.

I have it audio via the Optical because I cant seem to get anything other than 2 channel audio with the music on my PS3 hard drive through the Onkyo 605. I like to hear the audio through all 7 speakers on all channel stereo, and with the HDMI it only does 2 channel.

un-check 5.1PCM and 7.1PCM

its a pain to re-check them, but for two channel audio...it seems to be the only way to get it so the receiver will matrix.

Hmmm, something is wrong. Did you check your settings on the PS3? Or maybe the reciever?
