Default Can Blu Ray output video via component and audio via HDMI?

I just had to upgrade my old AVR with a new Pioneer VSX-21TXH. Great sound! Now I am looking to go to Blu Ray. However my TV has no HDMI inputs and just one component video input at 1080i. Can I run a Blu Ray to the AVR with component video AND HDMI audio to receive the benefits of the 7.1 sound but be able to use the 1080i video? Can the Pioneer AVR handle this in on setting? How?

Yes, you can do that. You'll just have to assign your inputs on your AVR and make sure the component output settings are correct on your BD player. Some BD players default their component video out to 480i, so make sure it's set to 1080i and then set the audio out to HDMI.

So I hooked up a pioneer bdp120 to my pioneer vsx-21txh with component video output and hdmi. Set the bdp to output video via component and to have the HDMI send audio. It appears it is still trying to send audio and video via hdmi. I have played with input settings and the best I can get to happen is either audio or video but not both! I cannot find an input that I can assign both an hdmi and a component video input and hve them both run at the same time.

What input can I use? How do I assign it to have both?

BTW- blu ray works fine with the component out with a digital optical audio hookup but I want the full capacity of the newest audio codecs.

why don't you run the component cable from player to TV and HDMI from player to receiver.
I think that would be the simplest way.

Unfortunately there is only one 1080i input so have it connected to receiver to get digital cable tv AND the Blu ray to run through.

Will the Pioneer VSX-21TXH not take video in via HDMI and pass it to your TV via its component outputs? Does your receiver only process same input type to the same output type?

Why'd you go for the BDP-120 if I may inquire? Its a rebadged Sharp that has received mixed reviews. I would recommend a Sony or Panny BD player if you wanna stick to the 120s price range.

Makes the most sense.

HDMI in only allows HDMI out for video. No downconversion of HDMI video allowed.

This is a receiver issue, not a player problem, and it's not one you can "fix". The input assignments on most AVRs allow you to link analog video inputs with S/PDIF digital audio inputs. But, they do not allow you to link an HDMI input with anything else. Most AVRs expect an HDMI input to include both audio and video.

You will need to get a component video switch to feed the one component video input on your TV.

NewBlu, have you tried turning off V. Conversion (pg.68 user manual) in the receiver settings?

There should be some way to disable HDMI OUT on the reciever...in essence to turn off any hdmi video outputting to the TV.

The Component video/HDMI audio method works with a PS3, so im sure it would work with most other players...so im thinking its a setting in the receiver. But I could be wrong.

also just thinking about it...you have to set your BD player output resolution to 1080i.

If you have 1080p selected no video will be output from the Component connection.

so the player options should look like this:

Component Video Out = 1080i
HDMI Video Out = 1080i
Video Out Select = Component

...you might also have to toggle between Bitstream vs. PCM for the audio, perhaps it won't allow Bitstream since the video is disabled on HDMI?

Run hdmi from the player to the receiver. Component cable from receiver to the tv. You should have hd audio and 1080i picture. Make sure the video output on the receiver is set to component. Blu-ray player output should be set at 1080i. Should be good to go....unless I'm missing something.

Receivers will not take the HDMI video from the player and output via Component to the TV.

This is still the best solution. Why has it been ignored?
