Default hdmi to component video

I just ordered a new Sony receiver to replace my current one because it won't process the high bit rates of the blu discs for the audio unless I use the direct connection from the blu ray player to the receiver. My older rear projection Sony tv only accepts composite, S-video, or component video and the highest resolution the tv has is 1080i.

So my question is can I hook up my blu ray player and my Directv receiver through there hdmi cables to the Sony receiver and then from the Sony receiver to the tv with the component cables? Will this work or do you have to do hdmi in and hdmi out?

By the way the Sony receiver is STR-DA3200ES if that will help any. I hope to replace the tv within the next 6 months or so.

It is absolutely possible. Whether or not it is possible with your receiver will be in your instruction manual.

It is usually a matter of setting the output type in the main menu of your receiver.

Should work though...I don't think Sony would leave out that particular routing option on one of their products.

Good luck,

Definately check the owners manual. I've read a lot on this forum that you can't go from HDMI ---> any other video transmission cable

From the manual (p. 28):
"Video signals to the HDMI IN jack can only be output from the HDMI OUT jack. The video input signals cannot be output from the VIDEO OUT jacks, S VIDEO OUT jacks, or MONITOR OUT jacks."
So to answer your question, no you cannot hook up the hdmi cables from your player to the Sony receiver and then from the Sony receiver to the tv with the component cables. You will have to connect the HDMI to the receiver for audio for your BD player (for your direct tv, you use either HDMI or digital optical/coax, it won't change anything) and connect the component video cables from the BD player and direct tv to the receiver and then from the component out from the receiver to the component of the TV. Another alternative would be to connect the component from the player and the direct tv directly to the TV, this could be a better way to go if you have enough connections on your TV.

Johk, thanks for finding that and answering my question, at least I can cut down on the cables a little bit since i have the BD player hooked up using all the audio cables now! And if I do get a new TV in the next 6 months I'll be ready to go.

Again thank you all!!
