Almost ten years have passed since commercial HDTV was introduced in the U.S. and yet, we still are not able to record our favorite HD programs on a removable disc from an external HD recorder. Why is that? All the marketing guys had to do was look at the history of home video recording to see that VCRs were successful not because they played pre-recorded cassettes, but because they had the ability to record favorite programs for a home library and/or to time-shift viewing. The public doesn't want machines that just play discs. It wants to record. Players in and of themselves will never be successful. Only when they also have the ability to record will the HD formats takes off. When will U.S. homes have the opportunity to purchase HD recorders?

Many CE companies had a bitter experience that disc recorders won't sell in US for years. That is the one of the reasons that no one is planning to release HD disc recorder in US market now, while in Japan, they are selling HD disc recorders but don't release HD players...

The FCC had to mandate Firewire outputs for one HD cable box per carrier. People with those are using D-VHS to record, and it is quite popular where available.

Here in Toronto, Rogers (one of the biggest cableco in North America) says it will not activate Firewire because of copyright issues. This despite "Copy to VCR" being a feature.

There is one model of SA PVR boxes with a DVD burner that will allow personal archiving. It locks the content (like on the HDD) to the PVR device. So, it can't be passed around.

If a burner was put in an HD PVR, I'm sure it would be very successful. But I think content owners don't want people to be able to keep recordings. They want to sell you that season of Lost and 24 on disc.

A couple of years ago when HDTV first came out, I saw HD VCRs. That would record on HD-Tapes. But that never took off.

Why the did they release players?
Why not recorders from the beginning like with VHS for example?

The point is, recorders are de facto more expensive... Probably why people only want a player to view movies. Recording still mostly happens with VCRs...
