Default 5.1 audio problem on PS3

I just picked up Fifth Element and it won't play surround no matter what my settings are. This is the first time a disc claiming full audio and not having it. My normal DVD plays fine. My unit is a PS3 and all my blue-ray experiences up to now have been above decent up to now. So basically has anyone have this disc and experiences issues with it? Such a great movie and the despair of not being able to truly take it at full potential. Thanks. Toxic.

Go to your Setup settings on your XMB and then post what settings are there for your audio setup.

Then include the audio equipment you have. Then maybe we can help you.

Hi,

The BD/DVD Audio Settings for Optical Digital is set to Linear PCM. I've also worked with the other setting "Bitstream", and it didn't make a difference with this disc.

All three 5.1 Audio Settings options on the DVD don't effect this either. The choices are:

1) English PCM 5.1 Uncompressed
2) English 5.1
3) French/Francais

Thanks!

I had the same problem, make sure that your outputs are set to bitstream, assuming you are using a fiberoptic cable. PCM is uncompressed and your optical cable can't support that much bandwidth in full 5.1. So make your changes to bitstream

What I don't understand, people are ALL shouting about how fantastic pcm is, but when your AV receiver does not accept hdmi, you cannot hear any pcm. And when you connect directly to your hdmi of the tv set, the only thing I can think of is optical connection to avr. Again, no pcm.

And if your AV receiver does accept hdmi (and pcm signal), but does not transmit 1080P but only 1080i like my Denon AVR 3806, how should you connect to your 1080p Television set or 1080p projector?

You can't blame the PCM format for what your hardware limitations cannot do. While the PS3 can only deliver PCM via HDMI, standalone BD players can pass through PCM via analog out.

However, this is not just a problem with BD players. The same problem exists with HD-DVD players. The interface for optical digital output, which was great for CDs and laserdiscs, is no longer adequate for the high bandwith audio and video signal.

You can opt to upgrade to a cheap receiver that gives good sound and 1080p pass through right now, since that will be what future electronics would use.

That depends up to you. Do you want to listen to PCM audio derived from all of Sony and Disney BD releases but get 1080i video or do you want to listen to lossy DD/DTS and get 1080p?
