Question subwoofer too close to HDTV?

t.v. techs said my t.v. did not display any signs of problems. they said it works fine at the shop. i showed the techs,(at my apt.) that it flickered, flashed, and turned off by itself. my sub is about a foot from my t.v. is that too close. the specs say 3 feet. could this cause such a problem? thanx.
