Cool METALLICA ! Smart Marketing Move !

So I picked up Death Magnetic on a Friday ? Very Interesting ! So with the advent of Guitar Hero and Rock band, correct me if I'm wrong but is this the first big break from the standard Tuesday release date ? Will other bands follow suit ? I wonder what revenue increases this Friday release will have vs a Tuesday release for cd sales and downloads? Friday release date.... could = beer, parties, and the start to a great weekend vs Tuesday, when it is a stretch to stay up late and get to work the next day.

By the way the CD kicks butt! Good to see them get back to their Master and Justice days ! I have given a spin for the third time now !

It's definitely a marketing ploy, but it's still pandering and comes off as desperate to me. I'll give them one more try, but Justice was 20 years ago and they haven't come close to being that good since.
I know of only one rock band who has been able to stay vibrant and true to themselves for 20+ years, all the while cranking out one mindmelting album after another.

There have been other releases before on a non-tuesday. Not a whole lot, but there have been others.

Although I like the Melvins ! I have to agree Slayer have not changed,..... made a detour to a degree, but still evil hard after 20 years.

Slayer has definitely been around as long and at their best (Reign in Blood, SoH, Diabolus, GHuA) are certainly just as, if not more "crushing" than the Melvins, but the sheer quantity, diversity, and irreverence of the Melvins sets them apart from almost everyone else.
Maybe our love of Slayer and Melvins should coalesce into a big FANTOMAS discussion?
Quite possibly the craziest sh@t ever.
Ever.

agreed, but have you heard the "new" Slayer from '06(Christ's Illusion, maybe)? Sounds like they're running out of riffs; they're all fast and heavy, but not very memorable. Meanwhile Melvins keep getting better and all the side bands and the ipecac gang are a great distraction. Nothing wrong with doing different things if your M.O. from the beginning was to mess with people. I mean in the early 80's when everyone (including the melvins) were playing super fast, they slowed everything down to a crawl and started embracing more of their metal/sabbath side. People hated it, but deep down they knew they loved them melvins for doing what needed to be done. Quite possibly the most underrated, but yet most influential band of the past 30 years.

Back on topic. So what do folks think about the revenue that a Friday release date for a CD/Download combo will have for future CD releases ? For games like Rock Band and GH

Maybe Metallica ran out of riffs in the 90's. I like Death Magnetic better than Justice. The mixing and mastering on Justice was crap. No bass. Ruins it for me. Rick Rubin is Midas when it comes to producing.

As far as the topic goes...Very few titles can pull this off. I am not sure if the Guitar Heros of the world would be a big enough deal. The thing is, people will buy GHIV, RB2, COD5, GoW2, Metallica, or whatever regardless of the release day. The sales of Madden would not have suffered or gained because of a Monday, Thursday, or even a Sunday release (which would have been awesome because of football being a Sunday thing).

The cd does kick some serious butt. Much better than their St Anger CD. It is a cross between Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All, and this being the 21st Century. Actually looking forward to seeing them on tour in comparison to their last album. As for the whole Tuesday vs Friday thing. Metallica has done this type of move in the past. There have been a few groups in the past that have done this type of move, Guns n Roses to name one of them with their release of the Use Your Illusions cd's.

Now an album that you all really need to check out is the new Priest "Nostradamus". This album is really good. I know for some it takes getting used to, but really fine work. As long as you realize that this is a conceptual piece and really listen to it, you realize how brilliant it is.

Keep the metal movement going!

I have been tempted to pick up "Nostradamus" but have been scared. I am an old Priest fan from the Screaming for Vengence days. Which I still feel is some of their best work. IMO only ! So you think I should put me fear aside ???

How is the sound quality on the cd? I'm seeing lots of complaints about compression ruining the sound quality at loud volumes.... If that's the case then I'll skip this no matter how good it is. I guess a new alblum like ...And Justice For All with good sound quality was just too much to ask for

...And Justice For All was a terrible album, sound quality wise.

There is some distortion, but I think that it is from the guitar effects more than the transfer. A mp3 of this album would ruin much of the glory. Rubin recorded this to tape, so there is some of that effect. It is not anywhere as neat and tidy as most modern recordings.

I know, but it was also made some time ago I'm holding this new release to a different standard as it is much newer. I don't plan on buying an mp3 alblum either so I am very interested in the quality of the release. As long as its not horrible, I may still pick it up if I can get it for $10 or less.

I got this CD from tower.com for $6.95 plus a couple of dollars in shipping and now I have most of the songs on the ipod and I can't stop listening to it. Remind me to never buy a new Metallica CD and then jump on the treadmill at the gym......I'm gonna be hurting tomorrow from all that running.

I agree it has alot of "And Justice" sound and my favorites "Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets" sound to it. I think it was a good marketing move and I saw alot of people buying the download/video game version.

There are three versions of the CD out there, the unlistenable, maxed out retail version, the demo version, and a promo version which is the best of the three, featuring a good mastering with bass and not headache inducing like the one sold in shops. I suggest people to buy the one in retail, keep it sealed, and download the superior promo version (or get the promo version on ebay).
Here are the differences as outline on the Hoffman forum. Just look at the difference in the cores...

Top: Retail CD
Middle: Promo CD
Bottom: Demo CD

Sound quality on the CD is good. It very clean like they recorded it in Space or something. I had it pretty loud and did not hear any compression on the CD. It is worth the 9.99 price at Best Buy for sure !

I picked up Death Magnetic this past Saturday for a mere $5 at Hot Topic. Worth every penny considering the price I paid. Much better than that St. Anger trash.

It has nothing to do with the time it was recorded. The quality is top notch. It feels and sounds like a bar band at a biker dive bar. It sounds like Harleyfest concert.
