I just ran some CAT 6 Ethernet cables from my living room up into the attic and back down to where my computer/modem/router is set up. I purchased 50 foot cables from monoprice.com (1 cable for PS3 and 1 for my DVR)
I changed my PS3 network setting from wireless to wired and the connection works fine. It seems like the browsing and PS store loads up quicker. My issue....it's taking much longer to download something on the PS3 compared to when I ran the "wireless" setting and didn't use the cable (taking a long time on my DVR too). Question.....is the 50 foot ethernet cable too long?? Do I need to add something to the ethernet connections to speed things up?? I thought being wired would be much faster downloading (PS store, etc.) Thanks for any help! |

If you haven't already, you may want to reset the router/modem or at least power them off and back on just to make sure nothing weird is going on there. |

I assume by checking www.monoprice.com you purchased UTP network cables (cheaper) but UTP means Unshielded Twisted Pair. You may want to check out purchasing STP - Shielded Twisted Pair. Since you are running it through your attic you may have a lot of things interfering with the transmission (lights, metal, etc.) As you mentioned, for browsing, it will not make that much of a difference, but for a larger steady download, it will.

I should have known there was a reason these cables at monoprice were so cheap....and I about killed myself in the attic running cables internally down two walls! I'm going to check some other stuff with the router before I make a change....thanks for the heads up! |

if you end up replacing the cables, you should be able to use the current cables to tie to and pull through the new cables, much easier than the first time around

I agree, it's not their fault. But, for someone that is not as computer savvy, I didn't know there were different manufacturing of ethernet cables (I know about the CAT ratings.......not this UTP vs STP.....it doesn't even say "shielded" on the cables in a retail store....I guess this is just an assumption).
