Wifi network address problem/ question

I'm at my parents house now. Brought my laptop to use whenever because I'm here for a week. I know how to set up wifi normally, i've done it quite a few times. But this time I click on the appropriate wifi name, then enter the wep. It accepts it, then gets stuck on acquiring netowrk adress for a minute or so then tells me limited or no connectivity. But I have full signal strength. And when I pit the cursor over it says the signal strength is excellent but could not acquire a network address. Does anyone know what's going on or how I could go about connecting it? I powered the modem and router down and that didn't work.

you could try changing the wireless channel in the router's control panel. i've encountered this problem before and this sometimes solves it. do you know your user login/password? if so go into the control panel via your internet browser (generally accessed by typing in 192.168.11.1 in the address bar but this sometimes varies) and find the section for the wifi channel. 1, 6, and 11 are the best ones to broadcast off of, so if it is currently set to one of those change it to another, or if it is set to auto try changing it to 6, then try 1, then 11.

I would remove it from your preferred wireless networks then try to reconnect. This is usually caused by a change in the security settings.

It needs to be hard wired into the router for that. I'll have to look for an Ethernet cable tomorrow

Are you running Vista? I had to upgrade an older Linksys router's firmware for it to connect with Vista.

I think going to that site will work for me. I'll just have to dig through some stuff here and find an Ethernet cable tomorrow

One possibility is that they're running MAC address filtering and your MAC isn't in the list. It'll allow you to connect but won't go anywhere. I'd also do the normal ipconfig /release and /renew to make sure it's grabbing it's own IP address. It may be grabbing the same one as another computer on the network, which'll cause it to show the limited or no connectivity bit.

1) if you are not directly plugged into the router it won't connect (since you aren't connected to begin with...if you were you could access it the control panel wirelessely). i see in an above post you were planning on getting an ethernet cable. once you do that and directly plug in try it again and report back

2) 192.168.11.1 might not be the correct address. also try 192.168.1.1 (or your router might have a completely different one, but those 2 are the most common). again, if you can't connect wirelessely this will only work once you are hard wired to the router.

Go to Command Line and type in ipconfig. The gateway ip is the address you are looking for.

I am hard wired into the router as we speak.

trhat second number worked. then it asks for a username/password. Not sure what I should put for the username. the SSID?

Is it a Linksys? If so, no username and password is admin by default.

How long should that take? When I type it in, a DOS screen pops up for not even half a second and disappears. I cant even read what it says.

this is the ONLY internet I've ever had trouble with. I'm just going to call directv tomorrow and tear them a new one

if it's a belkin router the default user/pword should be somewhere on the router itself (look at the sticker where the serial #, etc are listed). the screen that asks for the user name and password is where you want to be at. that is for the control panel.

edit: be careful not to mess with anything inside of it if you don't know what it does. you could further screw up your connection if you do. just try to find the wireless channel area. or if jason has any other suggestions listen to him as well since he obviously knows what he's talking about.

It's just confusing seeing as how its the same router/modem and password from 2 years ago when I lived here
