I'm having a weird networking issue, and part of me is starting to think its not the PS3's fault afterall.
I have a Linksys router. A cable runs to a switch, and from there two cables out, one to my PS3, and one to my 360. This worked fine for a while. A couple months ago, I got a new Router. Same Linksys dealie, newer firmware/revision, but basically the same exact router. Ever since I put this new one in, both the PS3 and the 360 dont log in right away when I turn on the system. They try, and usually time out or just fail. Most of the time by the time I get in I can cancel it, and hit the log in button manually. Sometimes it logs in, some times it takes a couple tries. Thing is, the 360, from the little bit I've used it, STAYS logged in. My PS3 however times out a bunch. I'll get a "You have been logged out of the PlayStation network error sometimes, but I can still browse or download. Sometimes my downloads stop and restart. Tonight I took the switch out of the equation, thinking maybe the new router just had trouble seeing something, but no luck. Same symptoms. Its very random and all very bizarre. Any body know anything about routers and maybe some settings I should look for and/or tweak? |

Removing the switch is probably a good place to start.
You should also check what IP address is being assigned to the PS3 when you get this error. Is this also a wireless router? Can you provide me with the model number for the router so I can try to find the specs and hopefully provide you with a better idea/solution of what to try. Of course, first things first, make sure you do a power cycling of the router and modem. Feel free to send me a PM if you like. |

Agreed, that he definitely has it setup as a wired network but it could still have a wireless component. If that is the case it might be worth it to try a wireless connection and see if the same thing happens. It could help identify the problem narrowing it down to either a physical port issue or a configuration issue.

I had the same problem when I tried to run my PS3 and Xbox 360 from a switch (linksys), connected to one of the out ports of the router (Netgear). It did not work and the two would not connect. Once I removed the switch and re-attached them to the router they worked again. The only thing I can think of is that this is somehow interfering with DHCP. But in networking this setup should work, but for some reason it doesn't. I wonder if this is a linksys switch problem, I haven't tried any other switch to see if it would work.

My first post after a month long hiatus. Great to be back with the Blu's!
![]() Do you have the router setup to negotiate your login to your ISP, what's called a PPoE connection? I have had this problem frequently with Linksys products dropping internet connections in this configuration when it tries to re-negotiate the credentials to the ISP at various intervals. Thus the random behavior you are reporting. As cartier mentioned, what IP's are assigned to the PS3 and XBOX. Did you have the new router assign new IP's or are you using static IP's for these devices. I'm not a gamer and don't own these so not sure how they configure IP's. |

I personally always use wired connections for my gaming. The reason is that they are typically faster than a wireless connection due to additional overhead on wireless connections. Also there is less of a chance of corrupted packets which requires the wireless connection to resend packets which can lower the throughput speed. Also encryptions like WPA and the like also reduce speed. Even though wireless can achieve a maximum 54Mbps, it is only going to be as fast as the connection to the internet it uses. So whicle a wired connection will always receive a constant rate, wireless connections will usually never equal the speed to a wired connection.

Is it DSL or cable? DSL modems usually have a built-in router and having a log-in conflict would cause those issues. If it's cable then there's no issue as it's DHCP. Almost all routers will go DHCP on factory settings.

What error code are you getting? I have a linksys router (wired) as well and frequently lose connection. The code I always get is 8002AD23... I have searched and searched and have not found a definitive answer. I am thinking about getting rid of the linksys and getting something new. If you have the same error code and find a solution I would like to know what you did.

You would think that the Cisco enterprise product techology would have filtered down by now into the Linksys product line. Frankly, their stuff is crap!

Thanks everyone for the responses. Most of what you guessed was right.
Wired Network, the switch is NOT a Linksys, only the Router. I'll doublecheck the switch brand tonight. I have tried removing the switch from the equation, only last night, and it dint help. I'll leave it unplugged a little while longer just to be sure. The Router does indeed have a wireless component, it was switched off for a while, and I only turned it on the other day when my new PSP-2000 arrived. The error occured both when the component was switched off and now that it is on. I dont use wireless for the consoles simply because I have never been a big wireless fan. I have an older 360, and I dont think it even has a wireless adapter, so I figured since the cable was being run across the floor anyway to go to that, why bother with the wireless for the PS3. Since the cable was already there... But I see what you mean with testing it anyway just in case its something wrong with the physical port. I'll turn on the wireless tonight and let you all know what happens. |

Cartier reminded me that I needed to reply.
Anyway, update is this: After i took the switch out of the equation, it didn't help right away. The next two days it was doing the same thing, having trouble signing on. But today however, everything was back to normal. Everything working good. Same with my xbox, I switched the cable from my PS3 over to the 360, and that worked fine as well. Now the question is, do I try putting the switch back in place? |
