Xmas Gift For Dad (Help Choose) - Blu-ray Forum

Well im not new but i have a basic question. I have read the reviews on most of the blu-ray players here and i was looking to get one for my father for christmas. My price range is about 300... lower is obviously better. I dont want him to have to update the firmware to often so ill do it when i buy it to get it up to date. he probably wont use BD Live. It would be hooking up HDMI to the tv and sound output through a yamaha receiver. i guess what im asking is based on this info which player should i get him.

well as you probably already know, each player always needs a firmware update. And as far as ease of updating, no player is easier to update than a PS3.

Given that, if a PS3 is not a choice for him...I would look at the sony s350 or panny bd-35/55. Those would make great players, and they keep them up to date with firmware.

Just be sure whatever player you decide on has an ethernet connection. Connecting to the internet for updates is a whole lot easier than burning a disc.

also check out the hot deals forums...i think on thanksgiving day (only), the Sony S350 will be $180?

My dad bought a Sony S-350 and we plugged it in on Wednesday. Took 3 minutes to get everything setup. There is a new firmware upgrade for it, but it played Hancock no problem without the upgrades. Fast load times, and easy to navigate menus (XMB like the PS3). $180 would be a great deal on this player IMO.
Ethernet connection is a MUCH easier way, simply 'check for system updates' and your done.

yea many stores will have the Sony BDP S350 for $180, that would be your best bet.
