well as you probably already know, each player always needs a firmware update. And as far as ease of updating, no player is easier to update than a PS3.

Given that, if a PS3 is not a choice for him...I would look at the sony s350 or panny bd-35/55. Those would make great players, and they keep them up to date with firmware.

Just be sure whatever player you decide on has an ethernet connection. Connecting to the internet for updates is a whole lot easier than burning a disc.
