Default Samsung HL61A750 vs. Sony KDS-60A3000?

anyone done a direct comparison of these two sets?

I was strongly leaning towards the A3000 SXRD until I saw the review of the Sammy HL61A750 on CNET, and then saw all the praise on Amazon & avsforum.com

I am torn between these two HDTVs...

i just bought the sammy HL56A650 at BB for $1300 and could not be happier. it has 24p for blu ray and 120hz. so i am now loving my BD movies!!

i upgraded from a sony 60" RP LCD SXRD model and i am even happier now with this tv.

SXRD is not LCD, it is LCoS, big difference. I have the 60A3000 and would put it up against almost any other tv. I don't know where you would find a 3000 at this late date, they have been out of production since Feb.

There were a few models of SXRD's. The A300's have 120hz and 24fps ability as well. I love my 60A3000 but haven't compared to the 61A750, just whatever Samsung DLP's were at Fry's when I bought it in January.

Either one will look fantastic with blu-ray no doubt.

I can't speak for the Samsung, but I'd put the SXRD sets from Sony up against all but the best plasmas from Pioneer and Panasonic.

They are truly remarkable televisions.

Yeah, I looked at the sony LCD RPTVs, and the PQ was awful. The LCoS SXRD sets are light years better than any LCD RPTV.

I had sworn off DLP-based sets until I read about the new Samsung LED DLPs.

I found one big-box store in town that still has a new KDS-60A3000, and also found one barely used. But I am still seriously considering the KL61A750, and if I get that it'll likely be via Amazon, as they have it for cheaper than anywhere else, with free shipping and no tax.

This is what a lot of people are saying about the KL61A750 as well. Can't come close for the size/cost. And after seeing a 60"+ screen, I just don't think I'd be happy with a comparable-cost 45-50" plasma.

Another advantage of the Samsung LED-based sets: They are super low power consumption compared to the power-hungry plasmas (150W vs 300-600W when running, 0.8W vs 25-75W when off)

Seriously the power issue is maybe $20-30 a year and shouldn't even be a factor in the decision process.

Not a major factor, no. But a factor. More so (for me) in terms of overall energy waste, not cost. But when power prices skyrocket, it'll be more of a factor.

And the cost difference between a 150W set (such as the LED DLP) and a 560W set (Panny 58" plasma) is more like $130 year. Not a huge sum of $, but still adds up over the lifetime of the TV:

HDTV power consumption compared

If you found a 60A3000 I would jump on it, should be able to get it for a good price. A year after they were initially introduced the 3000 series sxrd sets still have few equals in picture quality, I know my 60a3000 is awesome.

It works out to around $20/year unless you're watching a 100% white screen all the time, that's what those numbers are based on.

With normal viewing material the difference is substantially less.

All those numbers are also using out of the box settings, where plasmas come in TORCH mode.

Well, CNET rates the HL61A750 higher than the KDS-55A3000, and even revised the A3000's scores to adjust for the HL61A750:

CNET KDS-55-A3000 rating: 7.7/10

CNET HL61A750 rating: 8.0/10

So close, but at least according to CNET, the Samsung edges out the Sony.

The used 60A3000 they are asking $1600, which includes a 4 years of a 5 year warranty (transferable for $20, I checked). If I could talk them down to $1200 or less I'd likely grab the Sony.

If you could get the sony for $1300-1400 I would take it, that is what they are going for at retail for floor models now(when available).

I'm seriously thinking about getting a Samsung HL61A750. Does anyone know if it will go lower than its current price of $1483.20 on Amazon before Christmas?

I'd wait until "black Friday" and see what the price is then.

both are excellent sets. i have the sony 60" xbr1 (1080i) that takes a backseat to no one when displaying hd,digital, and regular cable. Bluray is incredible. the down side to the "bulb" tv's is having to buy the replacements after the warranty period or trying to sell it later when buyers consider the yearly cost of bulbs. the down side to the led dlp is it accepts a 1080p/24 input but converts it to 1080p/60= +1 for the a3000 that can accept and display at 1080p/24. so..... 1080p/24 a3000 or no bulb replacement a750
